Radiofrequency Ablation for Chronic Visceral Abdominal Pain

A recent study published in Interventional Pain Medicine evaluated long-term outcomes of splanchnic nerve radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in 52 patients with chronic non-malignant visceral abdominal pain.

Key Findings:
→ 73% of patients reported >50% pain relief at 6 months, and 60% at 12 months
→ Mean VAS pain scores decreased from 8.44 at baseline to 4.4 at 12 months
→ Opioid use decreased significantly at 12 months
→ 77% of patients had a decrease of ≥2 VAS points at 12 months
→ Among patients with severe nausea, average nausea days decreased from 23 to 9.1 days per month at 6 months

These findings support continued investigation of RFA as an interventional approach for chronic visceral abdominal pain.

📋Clinical Case: Anterior Femoral Cutaneous Nerve Cryoneurolysis for Severe Anterior Knee Pain

An 85-year-old patient with grade 4 osteoarthritis experienced severe anterior knee pain with standing and walking.

Shared by Dr. Arun Kalava, M.D., EDRA, this case follows the clinical evaluation and targeted treatment of activity-related knee pain:
🔹 A diagnostic anterior femoral cutaneous nerve (AFCN) block provided complete temporary pain relief.
🔹 Cryoneurolysis of the AFCN was performed using the Epimed Cryo PainBlocker® System.
