Today my daughter looked in my work bag and asked, “Mom, what are those little mats for?”

I told her I use them whenever I visit patients so I don’t place my bag, tablet, or supplies directly on their furniture.

Her immediate response was, “That’s offensive.”

It made me stop and think.

For me, it has nothing to do with judging someone’s home. It’s about infection prevention and protecting every patient I care for. As a nurse, I may visit several homes in one day. Using a clean barrier helps reduce the chance of carrying germs from one home to another, just as we wash our hands and disinfect our equipment between visits.

My goal is always to protect my patients—not to offend them.
