June is PTSD Awareness Month. I want to talk about something the preparedness and security communities don’t say out loud enough.

The people most trained to respond to emergencies — first responders, campus security professionals, military veterans, law enforcement — are often the ones carrying the most from the last one.

PTSD doesn’t always look like what we expect. In high-stress professions, it can look like:
→ Hypervigilance misread as exceptional situational awareness
→ Emotional detachment mistaken for calm under pressure
→ Quietly leaving a career you loved because you couldn’t explain why you couldn’t go back

We spend enormous energy preparing people for what’s coming. Physical readiness. Tactical training. Go bags. Protocols.

We invest far less in what happens after.

This month, I’m thinking about the gap between being prepared and being okay — and about how we as a field can do better for the people who show up every time.

If you work in emergency preparedness, campus security, or any profession that puts you in proximity to trauma: your mental health is part of your readiness. Full stop.

After Uvalde, Texas passed the Uvalde Strong legislation — making reunification planning a legal standard for schools. Not a best practice. A requirement.

EMS Week is almost over.

But here's what doesn't wrap up with it: The calls. The scenes. The multi-agency responses where EMS is holding the line while everything else gets sorted out.

This week, the federal government held a special session on prehospital blood — raising the national standard for what EMS is expected to deliver in the field. The bar keeps rising. The crews keep showing up.

We deployed a loaner Rehab GoBag to an active wildfire operation in South Georgia this week. Buena Vista Fire Department set it up next to the engine. Because when EMS and fire are working side by side for hours in brutal conditions — rehab isn't optional.
