Leaks and emissions releases in oil and gas carry both safety and environmental risk, and rarely just one at a time.

A liquid release can impact soil, groundwater, infrastructure and surrounding communities.

A gas release is a different problem entirely.

Methane escapes invisibly, and the energy sector’s emissions are estimated to run around 80 percent higher than what is officially reported, a gap that speaks to how much goes undetected.

H₂S is more dangerous still: it is heavier than air, so it settles into low-lying areas, and at higher concentrations it deadens a person’s sense of smell almost immediately, removing the one warning a crew might otherwise have.
In every case, time matters.

Today’s Shot: Rise and Retreat.

The Rise and Retreat combines a slow climb with a controlled backward movement, keeping the subject centered as more of the environment comes into view.

In an oil and gas setting, this shot is especially effective for showing the scale of a site while giving viewers a clearer sense of how equipment, infrastructure, and surrounding areas connect.

It is also useful across a range of industries.

In construction, it can reveal the size and progress of a jobsite.

In real estate and development, it can show how a property fits within its surroundings.

Welcome to Drone School: Shot Edition, where we break down the movements and techniques that make aerial video feel intentional.

Today’s shot: The Linear Tracking Shot. 🚁🚆

In this clip, the drone flies forward along the train tracks, following the same direction as the rails while keeping them consistently framed.

The movement itself is a forward tracking shot. The train tracks add a second visual technique known as leading lines, natural or man-made lines that guide the viewer’s eye through the image.
Because the rails stretch into the distance, they create a clear path through the frame. The viewer instinctively follows them, giving the shot direction, depth, and forward momentum.

To capture this smoothly, the pilot has to coordinate several movements at once:

The aircraft must maintain a steady speed and altitude while staying aligned with the tracks. The yaw has to remain controlled so the rails do not drift awkwardly across the frame. The gimbal angle also determines how much of the route ahead is revealed and how strongly the tracks pull the viewer into the scene.

As the drone gradually gains speed, the tracks move through the frame faster, building momentum and making the viewer feel pulled deeper into the shot.

Even a small correction can disrupt the flow, especially when the composition relies on two narrow, parallel lines staying balanced throughout the shot.

When flown well, the controls disappear.

The tracks become the guide, the landscape unfolds naturally, and the viewer feels as though they are being pulled forward into the scene.

The movement: Forward tracking shot.
The composition: Leading lines.
The result: A smooth aerial shot with depth, direction, and momentum.
