Working on a better global energy balance. Our commitment to Sustainability means that we make strategic investments that contribute to the paradigm shift in the world’s long-term energy balance. How do we do that? We produce renewable energy through repurposed animal fats, organic residuals, and the oil and grease we collect from restaurants. This results in our renewable diesel.

In 2019, we produced over 275 million gallons (more than 1 billion liters) of renewable diesel. See below for what this means for us and the planet. We aim to increase the total amount of renewable diesel by 150% by the end of this year. Looking at the reduction of CO2, this cleaner-burning fuel is the equivalent of thousands of fewer cars on the road!

Meet our colleague Markus Rogler. Markus is head of Production and Purchasing at LARU, a Darling Ingredients producer, where they make a range of sustainable premium pork and goose lard specialties. Markus started working at LARU in Germany eight years ago, in accounting. One of the things he loves to do next to his work is visiting a UNESCO World Heritage coal mine in his country.

“I started working at LARU April 2013 to be precise. For a short time I was also in charge of production planning, but looking back, my work got a little too diverged. I wanted to have more focus. This led to me making the step to being head of Production and Purchasing.”

“What I like at working for Darling is that you have the opportunity to develop myself further through my commitment. There are always new challenges and with them, new opportunities. Opportunities that have led to mastering new activities and roles and - in the end - even carrying them out on a daily basis.”

Did you know that Darling producer Rousselot is the official collagen peptides supplier for Papendal’s professional, olympic athletes? The nutritious peptides are used in - for example - the orange juice athletes drink in between training at the Sportcentrum Papendal in The Netherlands.

Meet Ashley Sanga. Ashley works for Darling International Canada Inc. and is our colleague for a year now.

“Coming from the food industry, I had little insight into how inedible materials were handled once they had left the establishment’s control. This is something I think many food processors and consumers just take for granted. So did I. I didn’t realize it really is food for thought until I started here.

“I've gained a much better understanding of how interconnected all processes within the entire food chain are. Fascinating. I really like to tell people around me about this. It makes me proud, being part of a company that helps to develop safe, sustainable ingredients for the food industry.”
