Across the country areas continue to expand, growing the need for additional capacity on the roads that connect our communities to work and recreation. A recent project along State Highway 71 between Bastrop and Austin, Texas provided an opportunity for our integrated team design concepts to merge , and water resources teams to review hydraulic structures, optimize the road profile/design, and reduce flood impacts along the 2.5 mile project length.
Moving from schematic designs to construction required a refined hydraulic analysis to be performed – updating flows from NOAA Atlas 14 rainfall, modeling split flow and numerous hydraulic structures, including a structure straddling the creek. Our efforts included a range of modeling scenarios, multiple software model versions, and alterations to determine an appropriate solution.
Join Hank Amen and Michael Pantell at the Texas Floodplain Management Association – Fall Technical Summit. Session C9, starting at 3:25pm on Thursday, August 26. We look forward to sharing lessons for the hydraulic and road design efforts that provided a lower cost option for SH71 upgrades currently under construction.
