Bringing the Promise of Personalized Medicine to Glioblastoma (GBM) Patients.

The recent discovery of another fusion protein mutation that is a driver of some glioblastomas (the FGFR kinase mutant – see http://www.genomeweb.com//node/1111531?hq_e=el&...) is a great example of why tumor-profiling for GBM is so important and so necessary.

Patient that harbor this fusion mutant (about 3% of patients) may be likely to respond to targeted inhibitors of FGFR. However, we can’t identify those patients from the entire GBM patient population without testing all patients for this tumor driver. The same thing is true for other well-known tumor drivers, such as the EGFR kinase extra-cellular mutants, and others.

GBM-specific tumor-profiling will be an important step forward in identify the best potential therapy options for GBM patients on a patient-by-patient basis.
