CLOCK MAINTENANCE

These are the plates of a grandfather clock. As you can see most of the holes the clock gears spin within have a black paste around them. Many times you cannot see this on the outside but can on the inside of the plates when the clock is taken a part. The black paste formed around these holes use to be the amber colored oil that lubricated these gears. In time that oil dries up and squeezes out of the holes leaving them dry. When this occurs the steel arbors spinning in the brass plates start to grind away on the plates making them oval shaped and creating added friction within the train of gears. When this occurs we have to drill these holes out and press new brass bushings in place to remedy this. To prevent this wear your clocks should be cleaned every 10 years and floor clocks oiled at least 5 years in between.
