🚗 Some of our favorite memories from four years of full-time RVing were the detours into our own family history!

We traveled to places throughout the U.S. where our ancestors had lived: Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Florida, and Oklahoma. What made those stops truly special was the people we found there. Cousins we hadn't seen in years and cousins we had never met before, with some wonderful surprises along the way.💛

One of my favorites: my mother's second cousin in California, whom we had never met, showed us photos of my grandfather's family that not even my mother had seen before! Imagine seeing your own family's faces in the home of someone you had never met!😊

Connecting with family, whether on the road or online, is one of the greatest gifts genealogy gives us.

One of the most persistent myths in genealogy is that immigration officers changed people's names at ports of entry. It makes for a compelling story, but it's not what actually happened.🚢

Agents recorded names based on whatever travel documents the immigrant carried. When there were no documents, they listened to how the person pronounced their name and spelled it phonetically.

Nonetheless, many immigrants later chose to anglicize their names on their own terms, often years after arriving, as they built new lives and blended into their communities.

This matters for your research! If you're hitting a wall searching for an ancestor under one spelling, try searching phonetically, or look for anglicized variations that might have appeared later in their records.

🧬 Sometimes a DNA mystery takes you all the way back to their roots to solve it!

I noticed a cluster of approximately 10 DNA matches connected to my great-grandmother's family, but none of their surnames rang a bell. They were all from California, about as far from the east coast as you could get!🤨

Their trees didn't share any of my family's surnames, but I could see they were all connected through the same branch of my family. So I did what any determined investigator does: I built my own working tree, linking them to each other and pushing further back than their trees had gone, until I finally ended up back in the city of my ancestors on the east coast.

And there he was, hiding in the 1930 census.🎉

My 2x great-uncle was living with this California family back when they were still on the east coast, listed simply as a “boarder.” By the 1950 census, this family had made their way to California. I wonder why!😉

🚨Don't let family gossip derail your genealogy research!🚨

One of the most important lessons I've learned as a genealogist is don't jump to conclusions when you hear a family story, especially one passed down with disdain.

I grew up hearing whispers about my great-grandfather that painted him in a truly unflattering light. The story: he had fathered a child who was then raised by his own son, with the ugly implication that something inappropriate had happened between him and his daughter-in-law.😬

When I finally dug into the records, the truth was heartbreaking… and noble.

His son and daughter-in-law had a child together, but the mother tragically died within two years of influenza. My great-grandfather soon after had a child with a different woman, but he himself died just four months after that baby was born. His son eventually remarried, and he and his new wife raised both his own daughter AND his little half-sister as their own.💛

What had been repeated for generations as something shameful about my great-grandfather was actually a story of profound responsibility and sacrifice on the part of his son, my great-uncle.

Those preconceptions we carry into our research can cloud our judgment and send us down the wrong path entirely. The records don't lie, but memories and storytelling across generations can absolutely distort the truth.

Sometimes the journey to find your roots leads to the most extraordinary discoveries! 🌳

My husband had always dreamed of visiting the town his ancestors once called home. While visiting our friend in Germany, he graciously offered to take us there since it was relatively close to his home. A simple stop at the local archives led to a chance conversation, and what happened next was amazing!

An archivist casually mentioned that someone with my husband's surname still lived in town, and that he was also passionate about family history. In fact, he was a friend of hers. So, without hesitation, she picked up the phone. He answered! On a random workday, he just happened to be home, and invited us over then and there!

Within hours, two men – strangers from opposite sides of the Atlantic – sat together: one with thick binders of German research, the other with a thumb drive of American records, piecing together a puzzle that had been unsolved for nearly 300 years. 🧩 They traced their connection all the way back to the same 6x great-grandparents. Seventh cousins, united at last!

For decades, my husband's German cousin wondered what had become of the two brothers and two sisters who emigrated to America in 1738 with their mother; the eldest brother had already married and remained behind in Germany. My husband had their American story. Now, my husband finally has the story of the family they left behind.

What an incredible discovery and reminder that family history is a gift meant to be shared across generations… and across oceans! 🌊

None of it would have been possible without our dear friend who not only drove us there, but served as a translator throughout this unforgettable afternoon.🙏

🚢 A ship manifest. A doorbell. A family reunited. ❤️

A few years ago, a friend asked me to translate an old Italian ship manifest: one that showed a group of Sicilian siblings who had emigrated together to New York. It seemed like a straightforward translation job.

But the story didn't end there.

My family and I were later invited to travel with that same friend and her daughter to Sicily, to walk the streets her grandparents had once called home. We found the towns. We found the houses. And then, almost by accident, when we rang a stranger's doorbell just to ask for directions, we found something no one expected.

Her great-uncle had been on that ship manifest, but he never made it to New York. His parents had quietly persuaded him, as the youngest, to stay behind in Sicily. My friend had always assumed he must have passed away young since she could never find a trace of him in New York records.

Behind that doorbell, belonging to a woman who shared the same surname, was the beginning of something extraordinary. Curious neighbors gathered around as this woman led our little procession down to the end of the street, right to the door of his daughter. The calls excitedly went out to the children, the grandchildren and, just like that, a family was united.

She didn't just find a missing branch of her family tree that day. She found living, breathing cousins who welcomed her with open arms. They stay in touch to this day: across the ocean, across the language barrier, and across generations.

All because of one ship manifest. One trip. One doorbell.
