If you have a heat pump, the approaching weather has the potential to cause issues for your system. Freezing rain, mix, and sleet can all accumulate on your outdoor unit, sometimes overwhelming the defrost system, freezing the fan blade to the shroud, and other unexpected problems. Systems that have total coverage emergency heat can be set until the storm passes, but many systems out there have partial emergency heat coverage. This means when outdoor temperatures are below design temperature (generally 17-19F here in Surry) emergency heat may not hold 72F in your house. If you keep your heat pump online throughout the storm, keep an eye on the outdoor unit. If it starts to become a giant block of ice, you should turn it off until the precipitation ends and give us a call. The lows expected over the coming week are going to get close to 10F, so nothing is going to thaw on its own. It’s always a good idea to have a plan B such as space heaters lined up. Stay safe and warm folks.
