Contractors — are you tired of putting on your tap-dancing shoes? You know the feeling. You sit down with your banker or bonding agent and suddenly the questions start. And instead of leading the conversation with confidence, you're... performing. Scrambling to explain a cost overrun. Dancing around a cash flow question. Hoping they don't dig too deep into the WIP schedule. That's not a banker problem. That's a bookkeeping problem. At Blue Ocean Bookkeeping, we design job cost systems and prepare financial statements that give you something most contractors never have clarity. ✅ Accurate numbers ✅ Stronger decisions ✅ Better financials ✅ Stronger relationships ✅ More confidence ✅ More opportunities when your books are built right, you walk into that office with your head up — not your tap shoes on. Ready to retire from the dance routine? 📞 (225) 715-9355

Question

Contractors and construction leaders: What’s one financial report you wish someone would explain in plain English?

I’m happy to break down any topic - WIP, job costing, over/under billing, revenue recognition, you name it.

Did you know your Profit & Loss statement might be lying to you?

If you're a contractor and you look at your P&L to figure out how you're doing — you're probably getting bad information. Here's why:

Your P&L shows revenue based on what you've billed. But what you've billed and what you've actually earned are two different things. If you've billed ahead of work completed (overbilling), your P&L makes you look more profitable than you are. If you've done more work than you've billed (underbilling), it makes you look less profitable.

The only way to know your real profit is a WIP schedule — a Work-in-Progress report that compares your percent complete against your percent billed on every job.

Most bookkeepers don't do WIP schedules. That's one of the reasons we exist
If you've ever looked at your P&L and thought "that doesn't feel right" — trust your gut. It probably isn't right.

Why Job Costing Matters
Job costing isn’t just an accounting task - it’s a decision-making tool.
When contractors understand their true costs, they bid smarter, manage better, and avoid the “where did the money go?” problem at the end of the job.
If your job costing feels unclear or inconsistent, you’re not alone - and it’s fixable

I hear it all the time:

"QuickBooks Online doesn't work for contractors."

In many cases, that's simply not true.

QBO Plus can be a powerful tool for contractors if it's set up correctly.

Unfortunately, I often see:

• Job costing through the Chart of Accounts
• No WIP process
• No overbillings or underbillings
• Reports that don't tie together

The result?

Confusion instead of clarity.

If you're tired of guessing whether you're making money on your jobs, let's talk.
