That "better" air filter might be making your house wetter.

A high-MERV filter restricts airflow. Less air across the AC coil means less water pulled out of the house, and in this climate a dense filter can add 5 to 10 points of indoor humidity on its own.

Down here, airflow beats filtration. Use a MERV 4 or 5.

After a leak, the clock starts. In warm weather, mold can start on wet materials in roughly 24 to 48 hours.

In that window: stop the water, get standing water out, pull up rugs and pad, put fans on the wet surfaces, and run the AC or a dehumidifier.

It's the difference between a drying job that costs a few hundred dollars and a remediation job that costs several thousand.

Does the sun kill mold? We tested it.

A piece of moldy drywall sat in full Louisiana sun for two days at 90°F. We swabbed it before and after, plus a piece kept in the shade. After 96 hours, all three grew.

Bleach takes the color out of mold. It doesn't take the mold out.

Household bleach is mostly water. On drywall and wood, the chlorine stays on top, the water soaks in, and the growth underneath comes back deeper.

The fix isn't a better spray. It's stopping the moisture.

"Black mold" isn't one thing. It's a nickname for at least three unrelated molds, and the same mold can change color as it grows.

You can't tell what it is by looking. Only a lab can. Either way, the fix is the same: find the water.
