à la carte DESIGN

à la carte DESIGN Residential interior design that's beautiful, comfortable and functional. No interior design project is successful without a strong team.

Allowing à la carte DESIGN to assemble an interior design plan and the team to execute it is a good way to make a home renovation, or remodeling project less stressful. At our interior design firm, the client is our No. 1 team member. At every step of the design process, we consider the client to be the best source of information about what will satisfy them, and we continue to consult with them

as the project progresses. To complete any interior design project, a team with many skill sets are needed. Over the years, à la carte DESIGN has developed relationships with many contractors, tradespeople and craftspeople in the area. We know the quality of their work, and their ability to complete the work on time. Our contacts also include local sources for designer furniture, floor coverings, lighting, fixtures, custom cabinetry, and more. Some of these sources are only available to “the trade.” We can even recommend artists and art galleries to complete the client’s vision. Interior designers use the home as a canvas for creative expression. At à la carte DESIGN, we combine artistry with skilled project management and an effective team to deliver interior design results that clients love.

à la carte DESIGN was founded in 2003. We believe that a well-designed home environment should not be limited only to the wealthy. We work with projects of all sizes and scope, from relatively simple space planning and décor projects, to full home design renovations and home remodeling projects.

► Here is are the steps we take to begin your project:

1. Initial Meetings

All great design begins with listening. An initial meeting is the opportunity for the client to share their design ideas, ideals and expectations. It is a meeting where à la carte DESIGN shares their background and experience in design. This is where a relationship of understanding and trust between client and designer is established and formally defined with a contract.

2. Discovery Interview

Listening begins with the initial meeting and carries on throughout the project. During the discovery interview the designer uncovers information about your lifestyle, the people who live with you and your design preferences and desires. This is where you share the details of your dream design.

3. Concept Development

The design interview leads directly into the creation of an initial design to be shared with the client. This phase is one of give and take between designer and client, where the overall design, as well as the selection of materials and finishes is developed and finalized. Here the designer helps you visualize a design that feeds the senses and captures your vision. We use AutoCAD software to display our concepts more concretely.

4. Proposal

In this step, the designer defines what it will take to make the dream design happen. What, by whom, by when and for how much. This is where the client says yes!

5. Agreement

An agreement outlines the final selection of materials and finishes, the process to completion and provides the designer with formal permission to take action. The designer can now order materials, select and engage fabricators, contractors and tradespeople for whatever role they may play in the completion of the design.

6. Implementation

In this phase, timelines and project milestones are defined. The timeline coordinates all parties and activities in the implementation and realization of the dream.

Built-in cabinetry can completely change the way a bathroom works, especially when it is designed to do more than hold toiletries. In this space, the tall cabinets bring a furniture-like presence to the room while also adding the kind of storage that serves both the bathroom and the adjoining bedroom.

That is the sweet spot I am always looking for. A room that feels beautiful, but also takes some pressure off daily life. If your bathroom is short on storage, this is a detail worth paying attention to.

Let me know what you think in the comments!

When I first looked at this bathroom, it was clear the space had been given over to the wrong priorities. There was plenty of room, but very little of it was helping the homeowner in a meaningful way. The challenge was not adding more. It was using the space with more intention.

That is what led to the cabinetry becoming such an important part of the redesign. Instead of letting storage feel like an afterthought, we made it part of the architecture of the room. The result feels calmer, more grounded, and much easier to live with every day. It gives the bathroom a stronger identity and quietly supports the routines that happen there.

If that sounds like the kind of change your home needs, a get-to-know-you meeting is a good place to start.

When people reach out to me, it is usually because something in their home just is not working anymore. Sometimes it is a kitchen that feels dated or closed off. Sometimes it is a bathroom that no longer fits the way they live. And sometimes it is the bigger picture of wanting the whole home to feel more thoughtful, functional, and cohesive.

That is the work I love most. I help homeowners create spaces that feel beautiful, yes, but also easier to live in every day. My approach is always tailored to the home, the people in it, and the way they want that space to support their lives moving forward.

If you have been thinking about updating your kitchen, bathroom, or home as a whole, I would love to hear what is on your mind. You can call, text, or visit the website to start the conversation.

Designer point of view: if a room has height, use it. One of the biggest missed opportunities I see in kitchens is stopping cabinetry too short and leaving all that vertical space untapped. It makes the room feel less intentional, and it gives up storage that could be working hard every single day.

In this kitchen, taller cabinetry completely changed the visual weight and usefulness of the space. Combined with the larger windows and better storage planning, the whole room feels more abundant and much more resolved. To me, that is what good design does. It makes a space feel like it finally became what it was meant to be.

If you are planning a kitchen update and want to make smarter design decisions from the start, let’s set up a get-to-know-you meeting and see if we are the right fit.

One of the best things you can do in a kitchen is make sure the island is truly sized for the room. A too-small island can leave the space feeling awkward and underused, while the right island creates prep space, storage, seating, and a stronger sense of structure all at once.

In this kitchen, giving the island more presence changed the way the whole room functions and feels. It is a good reminder that proportion matters just as much as finishes.

If you are collecting ideas for your own kitchen remodel, keep this one in mind and take a look at the website for more inspiration.

This kitchen had more potential than it was being allowed to show. The ceiling height was generous, the room had good bones, and there was plenty of opportunity to create something much more functional and inviting. What it had instead was a small island, short cabinetry, and an unnecessary exterior door that interrupted the flow of the room.

Now the whole space feels like it finally makes sense. The new windows bring in more light, the cabinetry actually takes advantage of the height of the room, and the island has the scale this kitchen always needed. It feels brighter, more grounded, and much easier to live in every day.

If you have a kitchen that feels like it is not living up to its potential, send me a message. I would love to hear what is not working in your space.

When I first looked at this kitchen, I kept coming back to the same thought. This room was settling for far less than it could offer. The layout was being dictated by features that were not helping the homeowner at all, especially that extra exterior door and the tiny island that never really had a purpose.

Once we stepped back and looked at what the room actually needed, the path became much clearer. More light. Better scale. More useful storage. A stronger center. What I love most about the finished kitchen is that it feels calm and capable now. It does not feel like a room fighting itself anymore.

If you are starting to sense that your kitchen could work a lot better than it does now, that is usually where good design begins. Reach out if you want to start talking it through.

One of my favorite parts of this work is hearing that a client not only loves the final result, but actually felt good throughout the process too. Kitchen remodels come with a lot of decisions, and I know how overwhelming that can feel if you do not have the right support.

What means the most to me in this testimonial is hearing that they felt listened to. I always want clients to know their ideas matter, and my job is to bring those ideas together in a way that feels thoughtful, beautiful, and easy to live with. There is nothing better than knowing they get to come home to a kitchen they truly love every day.

If you’ve been thinking about reworking your kitchen, send me a message and let’s talk about what’s not working in your space. Or, if you’re still in the idea-gathering stage, take a look at the website and see if my approach feels like the right fit.

One of the most important decisions in this bathroom was deciding to leave the layout alone. That may not sound exciting, but it mattered. It kept the remodel focused, avoided unnecessary disruption, and made room in the budget and attention span for updates that truly changed how the room feels.

Another key decision was bringing in pattern and softness through the shower curtain instead of relying only on hard finishes. That gave the room personality without overcomplicating it. Good design is often about knowing where to push and where to keep things simple.

If you’re wondering what in your bathroom is worth changing and what can stay, schedule a get-to-know-you meeting on my website.
