This time of year naturally brings energy and ideas: new programs, new partnerships, new possibilities.

That energy is valuable. And it’s worth channeling carefully.

The strongest organizations don’t just ask “What could we do?”
They ask “What are we ready to do well?”

Thoughtful growth doesn’t just expand, it creates an impact with your supporters that encourages shared ownership in your mission and continued partnership in the work ahead.

For those working in the nonprofit sector here in Colorado, having access to strong, practical resources can make a meaningful difference—especially in seasons where capacity is stretched and expectations remain high.

I often encourage leaders to stay connected to organizations like the Colorado Nonprofit Association, which offers a range of support designed specifically for our sector.

Their bootcamps and training programs provide space to build skills and step back into more strategic thinking. Their job board helps organizations connect with people who are aligned with their mission. And their Connecting Colorado series creates opportunities to learn from and alongside peers across the state.

What I appreciate most is that these resources recognize something important: nonprofit work is strengthened when leaders are supported—not just in moments of urgency, but consistently over time.

If you haven’t explored what they offer recently, it’s worth taking a look. There’s a lot there to support both you and your organization as you move through the year.

Spring is a time to deepen the relationships that sustain your organization.

It’s an opportunity to reconnect with donors, share how your work is evolving, and invite people more fully into your mission.

The organizations that build the most steady and sustainable funding are consistently nurturing connection, trust, and shared purpose.

This season can be a powerful time to:
– reach out with updates and gratitude
– listen for what resonates with your community
– refine how you tell your story

What is one action you will take to build a meaningful connection with your donors this season?

April offers a natural moment to step back and take stock of the year so far.

Not just what has been accomplished, but how the work is feeling. Where there is momentum. Where there is friction. Where things are asking for more attention than expected.

In my experience, strong organizations aren’t the ones that stay perfectly on plan. They’re the ones that notice early, reflect honestly, and adjust with intention.

A thoughtful reset now can make the rest of the year feel more aligned—and more sustainable.

Our work in the nonprofit sector can often be complex, urgent, and emotionally demanding.

For leaders who spend so much of their energy supporting others, we can benefit from the reminder to pause, reflect, and reconnect with what sustains us. And what better day to do that…on International Day of Happiness!

Action for Happiness is an org with a mission to bring more happiness and kindness to our world. They have a free online program called “10 Days of Happiness” which offers small daily practices rooted in evidence about what helps people feel more connected, resilient, and hopeful.

Today, I encourage you to pause and take a moment for yourself to do one of these exercises…and maybe even experience some joy along the way!

Katie

So many of my friends in the sector are feeling destabilized, still dealing with deep funding losses, tension within teams, and the mounting pressure of navigating government scrutiny or disconnection. It's a lot. It’s hard. And it’s real.

In the face of this imbalance, I’ve been asking: What are our anchor points as organizations? As leaders? As people doing this work? What can we stabilize in, so that we can radiate outward from a place of strength?

Naming an accountability partner can be an awesome anchor point for you! Here are ideas:

A long-time donor who shows up with unwavering belief.
A foundation partner that practices trust-based philanthropy.
A board member who listens to you, challenges you, or cheers you on.
A fellow nonprofit leader who simply gets it.

Take a moment today to reach out to one person today!

This note’s from my own bulletin board, and some weeks this reminder is everything.

It reminds me that great leadership isn’t always bold action or the perfect next step.

Sometimes it’s heartbreak, phone calls, and careful choosing. Sometimes it’s asking for help and letting the plan change. Sometimes it's realizing that a closed door is an opportunity to seek out and open another one.

And I'm here to remind you that none of these things are a detour, or unproductive. This is the work and, when done with intention, will benefit your mission.

If you’re navigating your own version of this in the nonprofit sector, there are a few things I’d love to remind you of: you’re not alone, you’re doing it right, and I’m rooting for you.

Katie

As February comes to a close, I often encourage leadership teams to reflect on three questions:

– What’s clearer now than it was in January?
– Where are we misaligned — and why?
– What decision are we avoiding that would bring relief if addressed?

Strategy doesn’t always start with answers. Often, it starts with better questions; asked early enough to matter.
