5 Simple Home Safety Fixes That Don't Cost a Fortune

Small changes around the home can make a big difference in reducing fall risks for older adults, and many safety items can be found for under $40.

Add motion-activated night lights
Light the path between the bedroom, bathroom, hallways and stairs.

Make the shower or tub less slippery
Add a non-slip mat or adhesive safety strips.

Remove loose throw rugs
If a rug needs to stay, secure it with a quality non-slip backing or rug tape.

Make stairs and changes in flooring easier to see
Contrasting tape or stair-edge markings can help make potential hazards more noticeable.

Tidy up cords and walking paths
Cord covers and organizers can help keep electrical cords away from frequently used walkways.

Bonus tip: Take a walk through the home and look at it with fresh eyes. Clutter, poor lighting, loose rugs and frequently used items stored too high can all create unnecessary risks.
