Harm experienced by others is not the result of a lack of hypervigilance, ability, or failure on the part of the one harmed. The weight of an individual’s choice to cause harm always rests on the shoulders of the one who chooses to inflict it. The inability to prevent the harmful actions of another does not make the one harmed responsible for those actions.
Attempts to create safety that rests solely on our own hypervigilance will inevitably fall short because they cannot account for everything outside of our control or for our own human limitations, including our need for rest. We therefore need a more secure foundation upon which to place our trust as we seek to steward ourselves and our safety well.
That foundation is found in the One…
🙌🏼who neither sleeps nor slumbers
🙌🏼who restrains evil
🙌🏼who takes what the enemy intended for evil and works it for good
🙌🏼who has secured for us a future where evil, sin, and suffering will be no more.
Because of Him, we are free to pursue wisdom and stewardship without carrying the impossible burden of believing that our safety ultimately depends on our own constant vigilance.
