The washing machine served as the packaging department and the warehouse was a typical suburban garage. It was 1980 and Dr. Stewart Lipton fused his entrepreneurial spirit, his clinical experience as Lab Director at a major Chicago Hospital and his wife Roberta’s business acumen, “if we can’t find a way, we will make one.” This simple, tenacious problem solving mission has remained the
guiding principle behind the business since its modest beginnings. Today, our almost one thousand current customers commonly refer to us as ‘those gadget people.’ We are immensely proud of our reputation for being one of the most flexible, innovative and customer responsive small companies in the industry. While our family of talented employees remains committed to the needs of laboratory technicians, Scientific Device Laboratory is rapidly expanding its development of OEM products for larger corporations and working with research institutions to bring novel new materials and products to market. It is the unique combination of expertise in the fields of manufacturing, microbiology and the vastly technical field of printing and coating microscope slides that gives our customers the ability to tap into our expertise and creatively ‘find a way’ to solve any difficult manufacturing and laboratory issues. In a family, there is communication, shared responsibilities, and appreciation of everyone’s contribution to the good of the family. Since the firm’s inception, the valuable employees of Scientific Device Laboratory have formed a family. Supervisors evaluate everyone not only on their attendance and quality of the items they produce, but also on their compassion and creativity. Working in this atmosphere, 65% of Scientific Device Laboratory’s employees have been with the company over 10 years.
