I just made a video explaining ShowedUp, the app we are building to change that.

ShowedUp is an iPhone app that records court ordered parenting time. At every exchange, you check in. The check in is stamped with the server's clock, matched to the agreed location, and the other parent is notified automatically in neutral words, facts only. Nothing can be edited after the fact. Missed time goes into a makeup time ledger, and when you need it, the record becomes a court report. It is built to be fair to both sides, because a record that only helps one parent is not a record.

Our goal is to get ShowedUp into as many courthouses as we can, so that parenting time orders come with a way to actually track them. Right now a parent who shows up and a parent who does not look exactly the same on paper. We want to change that.

It is iPhone only for now and it is coming soon to the App Store.

You are paying a lawyer thousands of dollars. You should not have to chase them to find out what is happening in your own case.

I hear the same complaints from fathers every week. My lawyer went silent for months. I have no idea what was filed. Every time I ask, I get an answer I cannot understand. And this is after a retainer that cost more than most people's car payment for a year.

Here is what most people do not know. In Michigan, the rules of professional conduct require a lawyer to keep you reasonably informed about your case, respond promptly to reasonable requests for information, and explain things well enough that you can make informed decisions. Most states have a version of the same rule. That is the standard, not a favor.

So ask for what you are owed:
Ask for updates in writing so there is a record
Ask for copies of everything filed on your behalf
Ask for the plan and the next deadline in plain language
Remember that you can request your file at any time

A good lawyer is worth every dollar. The question is whether you are getting the service you are paying for. If you are not, that is worth knowing before the next invoice, not after the hearing.

Family court is built for people with lawyers. Most of us do not have one.

Hire an attorney and you are looking at thousands up front before anyone files a thing. Walk in on your own and you are expected to know the rules, the deadlines, the forms, and how to present evidence, while the other side may have all of it covered.

So I am asking the question out loud. Why can we not help each other?

Every father who has been through this learned something the hard way. What to file. What to bring. What the judge actually cared about. What would have saved months. That knowledge is sitting in separate living rooms across the country, and nobody is passing it on.

That is what Fathers Fight Back is for. Document preparation, case organization, and a community of fathers who have been where you are.

Time that is never written down is time the court cannot count. ShowedUp writes it down.
