This photo was taken at dinner the night before our grand opening.
When you’re evaluating a franchise, it’s easy to get hyper-focused on the financials, the business model, and the territory maps. All of those matter, but there’s one critical element candidates often overlook: the team behind the brand.
When my wife and I opened our first unit, we were fortunate to work with an absolute world-class development team. They didn't just check boxes from afar; they showed up, rolled up their sleeves, and made sure our launch was a complete success.
Having that level of hands-on support in our corner transformed the entire experience.
When you invest in a franchise, you aren't just buying a playbook. You’re choosing the actual human beings you'll be partnering with for years to come.
Before signing an agreement, ask yourself:
Do your values actually line up? Do their culture and standards match how you want to run your business?
Will they show up when it counts? Are they boots-on-the-ground with you during your most critical milestones, or just a voice on a scheduled call?
Will they answer the call on a Saturday night? When something unexpected happens (and in business, it always does), will you have a true partner on the other end of the line?
Can they guide you through Year 1? In that first year, you need leaders who are part strategist, part operational guide, and part sounding board when things don't go according to plan.
As you navigate validation and due diligence, don't just vet the business model. Vet the people who will be in the trenches with you.
