Every athlete watches tape. Football players break down last week’s game. Gymnasts rewatch their routines, and their competitors’ too, not to critique, but to learn.

That’s what I’ve been doing this week with Miss USA and Miss Teen USA, and it’s what I teach every client to do with a national broadcast.

Here’s a little of what I’m watching for:
- In swimsuit/fitness, I’m watching her facials and what she’s signaling before she’s said a word
- In evening gown, I’m listening for the facts she chose to share and whether her story stays consistent from the walk to the words
- In interview/OSQ, I’m listening for whether she’s actually answering the question in front of her, or reciting something regardless of what was asked.

None of this is about picking favorites, or about playing the comparison game. It’s about training your eye, so that when it’s your turn on stage, you already know what intention looks like.

My heart happens to live in a handful of places, and it turns out my skill set lines up with all of them.

I’ve been in pageant-land since 2010, as a volunteer, coach, competitor, judge, producer, and (more than once) an eyelash-wrangler backstage ten minutes before curtain. Somewhere in the middle of all that, I picked up a bachelor’s in engineering technology, a master’s in innovation design, and training as a University Innovation Fellow at Stanford’s d.school. All of it ended up teaching me the same thing. Growth that actually holds up doesn’t happen by accident. It gets designed.

That’s what ImpACT Consulting is built on. Whether you’re leading an organization, building your career, or getting ready for a pageant stage, you get the same intentional process from me.

Four years ago, I hosted a webinar sharing tips for titleholders on how to advocate at the local, state, and federal level to promote their platforms. I just stumbled upon the recording and thought it may be useful!

Judges can’t read your mind, but they don’t need to. It shows up in your walk before you say a single word.

Setting your intention and your win conditions before competition week is some of the most important prep you’ll do, and it’s the part most people skip.

Miss USA and Miss Teen USA are both crowning their new titleholders in Miami by the end of August. Miss America is right behind them set for the first week of September in Palm Beach.

Somewhere right now, a titleholder crowned just a few weeks ago is doing that math for the first time, realizing the clock started the second she was crowned. But the eight-ish weeks I’m about to walk through don’t require a crown to matter. A titleholder who’s still a year out from her own state stage can build this same way, starting now, and by the time her own eight weeks arrive, she’ll already know how to use them.

Miss USA and Miss Teen USA are about eight weeks out. Miss America is right behind them. If a client called me tomorrow and told me she’d just found out she was nationals-bound (S/O state season & Miss USA open calls), this is what we’d build in the very first conversation, before anything else.

None of this is secret information. It’s just what happens when eight weeks gets used on purpose instead of getting away from you: interview drills that actually surprise you, a platform you can say cold in your sleep, a wardrobe plan with a backup built in, a team who cover every area to help you feel your best.

Save this if you’re headed to a national stage this year. Send it to someone who is. And if you’re not there yet but you want to walk into your next competition already thinking like a national titleholder, that’s exactly the work I do. I’d love to help you build it.
