Every change management framework has a slide on "resistance." I've built a few of those slides myself.

But almost none of them have a slide on grief. And that's the part that actually matters.

People don't resist change because they're difficult to work with. They resist because something real is ending, and endings deserve to be felt before they're managed away. I've learned this the hard way, with my own transitions and with the teams I work alongside.
Just naming the loss out loud, even briefly, does more for trust than any communication plan I've ever written.

Here's something I've been trying lately, and it's very simple: naming one thing that's shifting for me, out loud, to one other person.

That's it. That's the whole practice.

I used to think you got good at change by studying it, reading the right book, learning the right framework. Turns out it's also like a muscle. You build it in small, low-stakes moments so it's there when the stakes are actually high.
