🚲 Bike to School Safety

Riding a bike to school is a great way to start the day — and safety should always come along for the ride. 🚲

Students should wear a properly fitted helmet, follow traffic signs and signals, ride on the right side of the road, and stay visible and alert.

Whether traveling two wheels or four, we all share a responsibility for keeping our roads and school zones safe.

Ride safely. Arrive ready to learn.

Alumni Spotlight: Derek Ye, Class of 2019

After graduating, Derek pursued a degree in Chemical Engineering and spent several years working in the field before deciding he was ready for a new challenge and a change of scenery. That decision ultimately led him to rural Kenya, where he now serves as a Peace Corps Volunteer and high school teacher.

Derek’s days look a little different than they once did. He teaches math and chemistry, leads a computer class, collects water from rainwater tanks, and navigates the occasional challenge of unreliable electricity. While adjusting to life in rural Kenya took time, after a year of service he has settled into the rhythm of his new community.

One of the most rewarding parts of Derek’s Peace Corps experience has been the opportunity to learn about another culture and build relationships with people whose backgrounds and experiences differ from his own. His time in the classroom has also given him a new appreciation for the teachers who inspired him throughout his own education and for the dedication, patience, and effort educators bring to their students each day.

For Derek, Peace Corps service has been both challenging and incredibly rewarding. He describes it as an experience that pushes volunteers outside of their comfort zones while offering the opportunity to see the world—and themselves—from an entirely new perspective.

Derek is also working to create lasting opportunities for his students. His school is currently fundraising to improve its computer lab infrastructure, including the addition of solar panels to help provide reliable power during frequent outages. As Kenya continues to rapidly expand its digital infrastructure, access to technology and dependable electricity will help Derek’s students build important skills for their futures.

Those interested in supporting Derek’s school and students can learn more about the project and donate through the Peace Corps:

Funds raised through the project go directly toward supporting the school, with Peace Corps helping ensure the resources have a meaningful and lasting impact.

You may have heard the term food insecurity, but what does it actually mean?

Food insecurity is not knowing if you will have consistent access to enough food.

It can be influenced by things like food costs, transportation, employment, housing, and access to grocery stores or other food resources.

Food insecurity doesn't always look the same, and it can affect families in many different circumstances.

If you or someone you know could benefit from food resources, you don't have to figure it out alone.

📱 Explore our Community Resource Guide for food assistance and other community resources.

🤝 IL Find Food Navigators are also available in select school buildings to help families connect with resources.

Sometimes the greatest thing we can give a student is our time and attention. Jenny Wilke’s story reminds us that students may not always remember every lesson, but they will remember the adults who made space to listen, care, and walk alongside them.
