This time of year, disease pressure can be extreme in the Northwest. Correct products & timing can prevent unnecessary damage to greens.

I'm often asked, "Do I need to aerify my yard"? They see golf courses execute this process every spring & fall, so it's a reasonable question. First answer, it will never hurt to do it and there are many benifits as seen in the picture below. Is it necessary for a home owner to aerify every year...not necessarily. Golf courses do this because of the extreme amount of foot traffic - 30-50k of people a year walking on their greens. Plus, they mow with heavy equipment on a daily basis. This leads to serious compaction on their greens, tees, and fairways. Most home owners mow with a push lawn mower and have very little, if any foot traffic on their yards. Compaction of the soil will probably not be an ongoing issue. Will talk more about different soils and how that can effect the decision to aerify on my next post...
