As fall charms us with its beautiful array of colors, we’ve been enjoying mild, sunny days in the field and taking advantage of some wonderful outreach opportunities!

Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Doug Maxwell, a recent graduate of FLCC’s Fish & Wildlife Technology program, to shadow our staff in the field. Doug assisted with flagging a wetland boundary while gaining firsthand insight into how our Environmental Scientists navigate site visits and apply both U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and NYS DEC delineation protocols.

Another recent outreach highlight was DIEHLUX’s participation in the 24th Annual Women in Wildlife Campfire Cookout, hosted by the SUNY Cobleskill Student Chapter of The Wildlife Society (TWS).

Founded by now-retired Professor Kevin Berner, this event is quite possibly the longest-running Women in Wildlife event in the country. For more than two decades, it has provided an opportunity to empower women pursuing careers in fisheries, wildlife, and environmental fields. Students had the chance to network with a diverse group of women professionals and participate in valuable and encouraging conversations about navigating a traditionally male-dominated field, developing essential professional skills, and exploring the many pathways to success.

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the SUNY Cobleskill Student Chapter of TWS for organizing such a fantastic event, and to Professor Kevin Berner for his continued support of students and the generous use of his land throughout the years!

Meet the Team Monday!

Meet Chelsea Rockcastle! Chelsea joined DIEHLUX 1.5 years ago as an Environmental Scientist II and has been conducting wetland delineations and field work. She is also our Public Education & Outreach Coordinator.

• What is one thing you've learned during your career that has stayed with you?

One thing I have learned is to always have integrity and pride in the work that I do, no matter what job or task is at hand.

• What is something people might not realize about your job?

I’ve seen a lot of amazing things doing various field work over the years, but behind the scenes I’ve also spent a lot of time covered in dirt with sticks and caterpillars in my hair. Additionally, there’s also a lot more that goes into field work, like collecting unbiased data, following through with consistent protocols, and being able to apply ecological concepts to varying site conditions.

• Do you have a favorite bird, mammal, amphibian, or reptile?

Possibly an unpopular choice, but I love Gray Catbirds! As a member of the mockingbird family, I find them a bit whimsical.

• What's your favorite way to spend a weekend?

The Finger Lakes region in upstate NY has so much to offer! My husband and I like to take day trips on the weekends to explore new areas and support local establishments when we aren’t working on house projects. In my free time I also enjoy doing anything outside, so you can usually find me gardening, spending time on the lake, hiking with my dogs, mushroom foraging and skiing. I also love live music!

• What motivates you every day?

I’m motivated by my own personal growth; becoming someone that operates from a place of kindness and non-judgement and proving to myself that I can do challenging things to create the life I want.

• If you could instantly become an expert in any topic, what would it be?

Botany!

• What's your go-to road trip snack?

Meet the Team Monday!

Meet Sean McGinn! Sean is a Senior Project Manager within DIEHLUX's Ecological Services Division and has worked with us for 4 years.

• What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?

The professional accomplishment I am most proud of is being the trusted source by our clients when it comes to facilitating their projects environmental constraints, whether that be unavoidable natural resource permitting, project redesign assistance or mitigation plan preparation.

• What is one thing you've learned during your career that has stayed with you?

Knowledge is power. Staying up to date with the ever-changing wetland regulations, both on the state and federal level, is a crucial part of the success I, as well as DIEHLUX, has had when it comes to providing the answers our clients need to push their projects forward.

• What is your professional/educational background?

I graduated from SUNY Cobleskill in 2012 with a Bachelor of Technology in Wildlife Management. Unrelated to my degree, I worked for an oil field service company in Colorado for three years. I moved back home in 2017 to work as a field supervisor for Resource Environmental Solutions (formerly Applied Ecological Services). My tenure with RES lasted 4 years before I started working for DIEHLUX in April of 2022 as a Sr. Environmental Scientist.

• What's your favorite native plant or tree?

I'd have to say the American Sycamore, I'm an avid hunter so I admire its "camouflage" bark.

• Do you have any hobbies or hidden talents?

I'm not sure I'd consider it a hobby anymore, more or less a side business if you will, but I professionally guide waterfowl hunts in the Finger Lakes region of NY and have been doing so for 13 years. I am co-owner of an outfitter called Basswood Central

• Do you have any pets? Tell us about them!

Chief! He's a 3-yr old black lab that's a great family dog and my right-hand man when it comes to hunting season.

• What's one fun fact that most people don't know about you?

I'm going to name a couple. I am one of four members of my high school 4x400 meter relay team that still holds the school record to this day and won a state championship basketball title as a freshman in 2005 (Pal-Mac).

• What's your go-to road trip snack?

Beginning this fall, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is anticipated to implement a new rapid wetland functional assessment method for freshwater wetlands within the Buffalo and New York Districts. The New York Wetland Rapid Assessment Procedure (NYWRAP) will support USACE regulatory decision-making under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act and Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act, complementing standard wetland delineation assessments.

New York State contains a diverse array of valuable wetland and aquatic resources. Anticipated to take effect after September 30, NYWRAP will provide a standardized approach for characterizing a wetland’s ecological function within the landscape and evaluating potential impacts to wetland resources.

The rapid assessment procedure incorporates key aspects such as habitat, hydrology, and biogeochemical cycling, and provides a consistent framework for evaluating wetland function and condition when compensatory mitigation is required.

DIEHLUX will incorporate NYWRAP into our freshwater wetland delineation and permitting services once the procedure is officially implemented by USACE. Our goal is to help clients navigate regulatory requirements and support successful project-related permitting and mitigation compliance.

As State and Federal regulations continue to evolve, DIEHLUX remains committed to providing our clients with responsive professional service, technical expertise, and up-to-date regulatory guidance.

Yesterday, DIEHLUX’s ecological staff visited a local community solar site to gain valuable insight into ongoing agrivoltaics operations and opportunities for improvement and expansion of “ecovoltaics.”

Ecovoltaics is the practice of combining solar energy production with ecological restoration and biodiversity protection. Unlike agrivoltaics, which focuses on growing food crops or grazing livestock under or around solar panels, ecovoltaics prioritizes broader environmental and ecosystem benefits.

We studied onsite plant and animal species, issues with construction & design, research opportunities, ongoing studies, agribusiness, permit constraints, and areas for improvement.

DIEHLUX’s belief in “innovative ecology” pushes us to always find creative solutions versus focusing on the problems.

Meet William "Willie" Keeney! Willie is the Vice President of DIEHLUX's Environmental Compliance Services Division and has a variety of background experience related to large-scale construction projects involving local, state, and federal permits.

• What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?

One professional accomplishment I am most proud of is being Chief Environmental Inspector on the Atlantic Sunrise Pipeline and that the project was completed on time and without an environmental shutdown.

• What is one thing you've learned during your career that has stayed with you?

I have learned that projects always run over budget.

• What is your professional/educational background?

BS in Dairy Science Minor in Ag Business
