In 2003, Slate & Copper Services, in collaboration with Newport Harbor Corporation and Kirby Perkins Construction, was entrusted with a full cedar roof restoration at Castle Hill. Our team restored the roof using coastal grade cedar, hand detailed flashing, and historically appropriate methods that preserved the inn’s architectural integrity.
But in early February of 2026… Castle Hill faced one of the greatest challenges in its 150 year history. A devastating fire swept through part of the inn, damaging sections of the roof and interior. In the days that followed, the focus turned to preservation… recovery… and rebuilding.
Slate & Copper Services was brought in to lead the roof repair and rebuild. Our goal was clear: restore what was lost… strengthen what remained… and ensure the inn’s architectural character endured.
We rebuilt the damaged roof … installed new coastal grade cedar shingles… and fabricated custom copper flashing and details — each piece hand formed to match the original profiles. Every step required precision. Every decision required respect for the building’s history. And every detail was crafted to withstand the next century of coastal weather. This was more than a construction project. It was a restoration of memory… heritage… and place.
Today, the Castle Hill Inn stands renewed — its cedar roof restored, its historic character preserved, and its future secured. Slate & Copper Services, alongside Newport Restaurant Group and Kirby Perkins Construction, is proud to have played a role in protecting this landmark for the next generation.
