“Dad, I didn’t think this would be a big deal to you.”

We heard that line from our 11-year-old son this week, and it revealed the fundamental mistake many of us hardworking people make with our Authority.

While our son was taking his daily after-school nap, I ran out to get balloons.

We wanted to celebrate his consistency and commitment—not just the milestone.

He’d quietly scaled his YouTube channel, moving from a couple of views to multiple 50K views, a 253K video, and now 1,000 subscribers.

We watched him: create, publish, study, and refine. He genuinely enjoyed the process of expressing himself. Negative comments couldn’t stop him because his motivation was purely internal.

He woke up, surprised to see his mom and me in his room, stunned by the balloons.

Then he said those 12 words: ‘Dad, I didn’t think this would be a big deal to you.’

My reply to him is the absolute key to your own personal success:

“Son, the way you express yourself matters to us. We celebrate all the moments, no matter how big or small.”

You are looking for every guru to solve your problem, while overlooking the quiet power of your own consistent actions.

You won’t command Authority until you truly value and celebrate the message you bring to the table.

Stop searching externally for what you must own internally. The solution to your confusion is in the clarity, consistency, and confidence of your own process.

If you’re already a great speaker, this isn’t for you. This is for the rest of us! 🗣️

I received one piece of advice from a mentor that fundamentally changed how I show up on any stage—and it’s probably the opposite of what you’ve heard on social media.

The Secret: You will always be exposed by your level and intent to CONNECT and help people receive the message.

When I was focused on the slides and the “perfect words,” that’s when the filler words, the ‘ums,’ and the rambling came out. I couldn’t get out of my own way.

The fix? I learned to PAUSE.

In real life, presence comes from delivering messages and allowing them to simmer. That one change took me from rambling in the US to communicating internationally.

You can do this too! Focus on the heart, not just the mind. There’s one other simple trick to eliminate filler words (no more ums or uhs!).

Many people struggle to show up alone for self-improvement challenges,

like a 30-Day Speaking Challenge, because they don’t have someone to hold them accountable.

Without accountability, progress can be slow and frustrating. People might feel alone and less motivated to keep going.

Joining a group gives you the support and encouragement you need. The power of a community can make the experience more effective and fun.

On one of the days of the 30-Day Speaking Challenge, a student said “Chris, we’re not doing this for you. We’re doing it for us.”

That was a big win because it showed that the group had taken control of their learning and growth.
