BREAKING: The South Carolina Supreme Court will allow a new trial for Alex Murdaugh. He was convicted three years ago of murdering his wife and son at the family's property in June 2021. The new trial comes as they documented jury tampering and alleged jury rigging at the first trial. Becky Hill, one of the court clerks, reportedly showed sealed evidence photos to journalists, lied about it in court, and used her position to promote a book she wrote about the trial.

In 1987, the world watched as 18-month-old Jessica McClure fell into a narrow well in Midland County. For nearly 60 hours, rescuers worked around the clock, capturing the attention, and hearts, of millions across the country.

She became forever known as “Baby Jessica,” a symbol of hope, survival, and collective human compassion.

Nearly four decades later, that same name has reappeared in headlines, but under very different circumstances.

Jessica McClure Morales, now 40, was arrested following a reported domestic disturbance at her home in Midland County, Texas. Authorities responded to the situation late Saturday night, ultimately charging her with assault related to family violence.

In 2012, a Texas father found his ranch hand sexually assaulting his five-year-old daughter behind a remote barn.

He beat him to death with his bare hands, then called 911.

A grand jury declined to indict the man, finding that he was allowed to use deadly force to protect his daughter.

On October 12, 1906, a disagreement between two men in rural Missouri spiraled into a tragedy that would shock the entire region.
Joseph “Jody” Hamilton, a young farm worker, had argued with farmer Carnell “Carney” Parsons over a horse and carriage ride Hamilton had obtained. Parsons believed it had been stolen. The tension between them grew quickly.
The men eventually struck a deal—$25 and a single-shot rifle in exchange for the horse. But as Parsons drove away down a quiet country road with his wife Minnie and their three children, Hamilton began to believe he had been cheated.
Anger took over.
Hamilton followed the family and confronted them again. During the heated confrontation, he fired the rifle, wounding Parsons. The gun broke after the shot, but the violence continued. Hamilton attacked Parsons with the broken barrel until he died.
Minnie rushed to defend her husband but was also attacked while the children looked on in terror. In the chaos that followed, the entire Parsons family lost their lives.
Hamilton tried to hide the crime and escape, but he was captured soon afterward. The brutality of the case stunned Missouri. Just two months later, on December 21, 1906, Hamilton was executed by hanging at the age of 21. Thousands reportedly gathered to witness it.
More than a century later, the story remains a grim reminder of how quickly anger can spiral out of control—and how a single moment can destroy an entire family.

Today, Carmen Mejia was exonerated after Travis County District Court Judge P. David Wahlberg dismissed a 2003 murder charge against her, following a ruling from the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals (CCA) — the state's highest criminal court — overturning her convictions and finding that new evidence established that Ms. Mejia is "actually innocent."

The CCA's decision on Jan. 22, 2026 found Ms. Mejia actually innocent of the death of a 10-month-old infant in her care who was critically burned from scalding bathwater due to a water heater in her rental home that lacked safety technology. Ms. Mejia has spent the last 22 years in prison for what the State claimed to be murder but now agrees was, in fact, a tragic accident.

The state's own medical examiner reversed the manner of death from homicide to accident. The State's key experts who originally testified against Ms. Mejia recanted their testimony supporting the prosecution's theory that an adult had to have intentionally caused the burns. Judge P. David Wahlberg found that no crime ever took place and subsequently, the CCA ruled that Ms. Mejia had established her innocence and overturned her conviction.
