🌿 FIDDLEHEADS — A SPRING TREASURE FROM THE FOREST! 🌿

One of my favorite things about foraging is discovering just how much food nature provides. Fiddleheads are the young, tightly curled fronds of ferns, and when properly identified and prepared, they make a delicious wild spring vegetable. 💚

🌱 Fiddleheads provide:
✔️ Vitamins A & C
✔️ Iron & manganese
✔️ Potassium
✔️ Fiber
✔️ Antioxidants
✔️ Omega-3 fatty acids

🔎 Identification matters! The commonly harvested edible fiddlehead is the Ostrich Fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris). Look for the distinctive deep groove running along the inside of the smooth stem—almost like a celery stalk—and the brown papery covering on newly emerging coils.

🌿 Harvest only a few fiddleheads from each crown so the plant has plenty left to grow. Never harvest a fiddlehead unless you're completely confident of the identification.

⚠️ Fiddleheads should never be eaten raw. Clean them well and cook thoroughly before eating. Wild foods can also be contaminated by polluted soil or water, so choose your harvesting location carefully.

There is something incredibly satisfying about walking into the forest and coming home with food. 🌲💚

Making Comfrey Joint & Bruise Salve

Comfrey is known for its soothing properties and is often used to support healing of damaged tissue.
Ingredients

2 parts comfrey
1 part thyme
1 part rosemary
15 drops arnica extract
5 drops lavender essential oil
1 cup (235 ml) sesame oil (or another carrier oil)
1/4 cup (54 g) beeswax

Directions

In a double boiler, heat the oil and beeswax together until the beeswax melts.
Slowly stir in the comfrey, thyme, and rosemary.
Let the mixture simmer/macerate on low heat for a couple of hours, stirring occasionally. Keep an eye on the water level in the double boiler so it doesn’t run dry.
Remove from heat.
Line a clean container with cheesecloth or muslin and pour the mixture through it.
Press the herbs with a spatula (or the back of a spoon) to squeeze out as much oil as possible.
Gather the cloth and wring out any remaining oil.
Pour the strained salve into a clean, sealable container.
Seal, label, and date. Let it cool until it thickens/solidifies before using.

How to use

Apply to the affected area as often as needed.

Yield: about 1 1/4 cups (300 ml)
