I finished setting up my parents for success. Both of their PCs are updated, have vulnerability scanning in place, O365 licensing tied to a legitimate email, a proper password manager on all their devices, a printer that prints and scans, and their files from old machines migrated and active backups.

Going forward, it'll be much easier to manage, safer and more reliable.

I was chatting with my dentist about her office tech. She was aware that Windows 10 end of life is in October, but wasn't planning on acting on it until September. A few of her PCs are close to 10 years old.

I let her know that she should look into this well before September. If any of the older PCs don't have TPM chips, they may not be compatible. If she needs to purchase new hardware, it's better to know as early as possible in case she needs to budget.

She already works with an MSP.

"They handle all this stuff. I'm not good with computers."

Then I asked about updates.
"Do they handle updates for you?"
"I think so."
"Do you mind if I check?"

No updates in almost 2 years. It took less than a minute to check.

I gave her a short list of things to ask her MSP for. If they didn't have time to address them, I also gave her my card.

The top three in each category will advance to a second round of voting, taking place January 31 – February 7, 2025. Winners will be celebrated at the Ellsworth Chamber’s Annual Awards Banquet on February 17, 2025.

This past Sunday, my parents asked me to help them with their computers/printer. It was a good opportunity to work through my onboarding process and get in front of any potential issues before consulting with a 'real' client. When I walked in the door, my dad handed me a crisp $1 bill with a big grin on his face.

While this doesn't put me in the black quite yet, I'm elated to have my parents as my first 'customers'. They have been instrumental in my success by instilling curiosity, kindness, honesty, and a hard work ethic. I would not be who I am today without their love and support.

Past that, they had a machine still running Windows Vista and pulled a piece of paper out of a stack with passwords written on it. I have my work cut out for me, but I'm going to earn that dollar.
