Normally the Shiva Nataraj is encircled by the flames of the world, the fires of the universe. These are representations of the manifest world and therefore also Shiva, your very own Self. Shiva Nataraj is the destroyer of ignorance through the dance of bliss, and bestows fearlessness, making the sound of OM with the cosmic drum. An important aspect of my process of photographing people is to get the feeling across that the divine ever-creative energy, Goddess Shakti, utterly LOVES being and manifesting exactly as this person. Sometimes I feel the photoshoots are dharana-fests, Shiva loves being and Shakti loves becoming. With the inner light in focus the mirror becomes polished.

A few days ago I did a photoshoot with a devotee of Swami Yogananda. Someone who loves inner divinity. The photoshoot was an incredible dharana fest. A dharana is a yogic centering exercise.
She described the whole experience as transformational. She had finished writing a book and needed photographs. Our photo session might actually turn into another book. It was a celebration of light in the heart. One of the contemplations was to enter into a space where you become aware that you are not the body. Now, what does your face look like when you know that you are not the body?
