I’ve had the privilege of working alongside great coaches moss_jarvis and — developing the advanced skills of defensive linemen.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve focused on attention and self-talk.

Not just what to think — but how to think when it matters.

We’ve broken it down into:
• Thinking vs. Doing
• Broad vs. Narrow focus
• Instructional vs. Inspirational self-talk

Because defense is demanding.
It requires power, awareness, and discipline — all at once.

It’s easy to walk to the line, put your hand down, and react.

But when athletes learn to funnel their focus and connect it to a clear task…
that’s when performance becomes intentional.

Before each drill, I ask:
• What type of task is this?
• What 1–3 words will guide you through it?

This gives athletes a moment to think, commit, and apply.

And it gives us, as coaches, a window into how they’re processing —
so we can reinforce it when the moment gets tough.

That’s how culture is built.
Not just through effort — but through understanding.

It’s a privilege to do this work in the field of mental performance.

Coaches — what cues do your athletes use before a rep?

Last weekend, with God's grace, I had the honor of presenting at the AASP Southwest Regional Conference. I was able to present on an amazing experience from the 2025 Deaflympics.

Implementing and adapting Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) for Deaflympians. By no means am I an expert; however, there is so much for all of us to learn about being adaptive in the moment when running an intervention. When you think you have a plan, it can change for the better if we stay present with the people we care for. This opportunity allowed me to consider how to enhance future PMR sessions for D/deaf, hard-of-hearing (HH), and hearing people.

This opportunity would not have been possible without the amazing members of the USADSF Performance Psychology Team, the University of Western States, and the amazing athletes of the USA Deaf Sport Federation.

It is an honor to partner with two fantastic youth organizations. In a time when youth athletes face pressure to perform at high levels, these groups have prioritized their athletes' mental well-being. Change will be inevitable through education and action.

✈️ Big News!!!!

By the blessings of God, I’m honored to share that I’ll be supporting the athletes of the USA Deaf Sports Federation as they prepare for the 2025 Deaflympics in Tokyo this November.

As a mental performance coach, it’s a privilege to walk alongside these resilient and talented athletes, helping them build the mental strength to compete with clarity, confidence, and composure on the world stage.

These athletes don’t just play through pressure — they overcome communication barriers, cultural challenges, and the weight of representing their communities with pride.

This is why I pursued Mental Performance: to cultivate strength in the mind, body, and turn purpose into action.

Support by giving us a follow! Help spread awareness about the journey of these elite Deaf athletes.

I can’t wait to share more of the journey. Stay tuned.

Congratulations, Ruby! 🎉

As coaches, we are honored to work with athletes who set their sights on competing at the collegiate level. This journey requires strength, resilience, and dedication—qualities that few possess and even fewer refine to this level.

Ruby, your relentless work ethic, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to your goals have been inspiring. These qualities will not only propel you forward as an athlete at Mount Olive University. Still, they will also shape your success beyond the game, helping you grow into a leader in your community and future profession.

🎯 The SAID Principle: A Blueprint for Change in Fitness & Life 🏋️‍♂️✨

As we enter the first week of 2025, many feel the pull for change—improving our fitness, breaking old habits, or building new, healthier ones. But how do we actually make lasting changes? Enter the SAID Principle.

What is the SAID Principle?
In fitness, SAID stands for Specific Adaptations to Imposed Demands. This means your body adapts specifically to the type of stress you place on it. For example, if you lift heavier weights, your muscles grow stronger; if you run more, your endurance improves. Consistent, focused effort produces real, tangible results.

But here's the thing: the SAID Principle doesn’t just apply to exercise. It’s a powerful concept for changing behavior and mindset too.

Applying SAID to Behavior Change:
🧠 Small, consistent actions = Big results. Want to become more confident? Practice positive self-talk daily. Want to be more disciplined? Start with one simple habit, like making your bed every morning. Just like your muscles respond to resistance, your mind and behaviors respond to repeated effort in the direction of change.

Here’s how to get started:
1️⃣ Identify your goal: Whether it’s fitness, mindfulness, or personal growth, clarity is key.
2️⃣ Break it down: Focus on small, manageable steps that align with your goal.
3️⃣ Stay consistent: Just like in training, consistency trumps perfection.

Fitness Example: Want to run a 5K? Start with shorter runs, build mileage gradually, and your body will adapt.
As we enter a new year, many feel the pull for change—improving our fitness, breaking old habits, or building new, healthier ones. But how do we actually make lasting changes? Enter the SAID Principle. Consistent, focused effort produces real, tangible results.

Remember, change takes time, effort, and patience. Just like the SAID Principle works in fitness, it works in life—what you focus on consistently will grow and adapt. Let this new year be a year of purposeful change and growth. You’ve got this! 💪✨

Hello Soul Strength Followers,

This week's Wisdom Wednesday is about a topic near my heart: Sport Specialization. Youth sport specialization is when kids choose one sport at a young age and are involved in year-round training. Research shows the downside to having kids involved in solely one sport is an increased risk of injury and burnout.

How do we reduce the risk?

Strategies
Resistance Training: Particularly resistance training that incorporates movement patterns that differ from those of the sport, allowing them to learn different motor skills. The risk of injury for specialized athletes is partly from the continual repetition of the same movement year-round. This can create muscle imbalances that should be monitored throughout the year. Coaches and Personal Trainers will consider whether the athlete is in Pre-Season, In-Season, or Post-Season.

Wellness check-ins: It is important that the truly enjoys their sport. They should learn how to navigate stress and have goals and aspirations to grow. Youth Sports teaches kids how to be active, work with teams, learn from others, etc. The goal of youth sports is not to create professional athletes. Message me in the DMs to talk about this more! This is where mental skills become essential for the youth.

Coaches and Parents: your child's desire to be involved in multiple sports or encourage free play. Learn about why your child wants to be involved in sports or other activities. At the end of the day, they are kids, and they have the right to be involved in activities that interest them, engage them, and help them learn the life skills to be great people.

Hello All,

This Wisdom Wednesday's topic is how lifting can be a foundation for training focus, especially for youth athletes. Proper resistance training allows the body to learn movement efficiency, which only comes naturally to some. Building the mind-body connection can take years of training and requires the mental skill of focus. Young athletes tend to rush movements, so teaching them what to see and feel is foundational to helping them grow.

External focus can be built by using a mirror and having them see their form. Depending on the muscle groups (front delt, quads, etc.), they can see the muscles being used.

Internal focus can require a higher level of awareness as the performer builds a connection to the movement. A trainer can have the performer close their eyes and perform a leg extension (quad); if they can't feel, ask for consent to provide a tactile cue so that as they engage in the movement, they can start building a connection to the muscle.

While the focus training in a lifting session may not be sport-specific, it provides a foundation and a bridge to connect the concepts to other domains, such as schoolwork, sports, work, etc. Further, sport-specific focus training can be accomplished in a mental performance session. Being a Performance Coach with knowledge in both physical and mental performance allows an athlete to actively work on the foundations during resistance training while refining the skill with either online or in-person sessions.

Soul Strength provides both online and in-person sessions. Using the app to develop lessons, worksheets, and direct access to talking with me about mental performance practices throughout the week.
