Open your bank statement. Count the software subscriptions.

Now count the ones you actually opened this month.

AI answers the question you asked.

A person who knows your business notices the thing you didn't ask about.

That one client's payments have quietly slipped from net-30 to net-60 over four months.

The social media posts that get real comments are the ones where you talk about a client problem, and the last four posts have all been announcements.

The same business expense has been coded to the wrong category since March.

None of that shows up in a prompt. It shows up because a human is looking at your business week after week and building a picture.

Ways to spot an email that a robot wrote:

•"I hope this message finds you well."
•"Let's unpack that."
•"In today's fast-paced business landscape…"

Three bullet points that all say the same thing. A closing sentence that circles back to the opening sentence for no reason.

Your clients can tell too. They're just too polite to say so.

Fast. Tireless. Available at 2am. Genuinely impressive on the first draft.

Also: has never met your customers, doesn't know why you fired that vendor, states wrong things with total confidence, and will never once tell you "hey, I think we have a problem."

Interns are valuable. Nobody hands one the keys and stops checking their work.

The question isn't whether AI is useful. It's who's managing it.

Some business owners are genuinely excited to learn AI tools. Great! Go build till your heart’s content.

The rest of you have a business to run and no interest in becoming a part-time software evaluator.

That's fine. It's allowed.

Then spent 15 more minutes fixing the output.

The AI subscription is $20 a month. That's the part everyone quotes.

Here's the part nobody quotes: the hour you spent figuring out how to phrase the request. The second hour re-doing it because the output was generic. The 20 minutes verifying the numbers it gave you. The follow-up email you had to rewrite anyway because it didn't sound like you.

Price your own hour honestly and run that math again.

Cheap tools aren't cheap when your time is the input.
