Why Your "Clean" Routine Might Be Wrecking Your Barrier
Lately, Iāve been doing a lot of skincare rehab for my virtual clients and at the studio . Several clients have come in with sensitized, red, and congested skin, and after a little detective work, two specific culprits keep popping up on the bathroom counters: ClearStemās VitaminScrub and DIMEās Gentle Jelly Cleanser.
On paper, they look "clean." In practice? Theyāve been "Offenders of the Week" for my clients' skin barriers. Here is the breakdown!
ā The Offender: ClearStem VitaminScrub
While marketed as an "acne-safe" physical exfoliant, the reality is that many clients are over-using it or using it on already inflamed skin.
The Problem: In our dry, high-altitude Colorado air, physical scrubbing can create micro-tears in a compromised barrier. If you have active breakouts, youāre often just spreading bacteria and increasing inflammation. Itās too much hustle for skin that needs healing!
ā The Offender: DIME Gentle Jelly Cleanser
"Gentle" is in the name, but my clients' skin is telling a different story.
The Problem: Many "jelly" textures rely on specific surfactants to get that satisfying slip and foam. For some, these can be surprisingly stripping, leaving the skin with that "tight" feeling post-wash. If your cleanser leaves you feeling like you need to rush for moisturizer, itās not actually gentleāitās disrupting your acid mantle.
The Evergreen Lesson š²
Skincare isn't about following a clean or green trend; itās about biocompatibility. Just because an influencerās skin loves a jelly cleanser doesn't mean your barrier can handle it, especially when we are fighting for every drop of moisture in the mountains.
If your skin feels WRECKED and youāve been using these products, itās time to pause any exfoliation and find a ritual that actually builds your skin back up.
