In Episode 173, host I. David Daniels, PhD, CSD, VPS. and guest Dr. Marnie Dobson Zimmerman will discuss psychosocial safety from her lens as convener of a new group called the Stress Prevention Alliance. The Work Stress Prevention Alliance is a group of individuals representing academic research, labor, and other occupational health and safety advocates. The Alliance was formed in response to an urgent call to address the high prevalence of work-related stress (due to psychosocial hazards) in the U.S.

Dr. Dobson is the Director of the Healthy Work Campaign and has served as the Associate Director of the Center for Social Epidemiology (a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit) since 2005. With more than 20 years of experience conducting worker-centered occupational stress research at the University of California, Irvine, Center for Occupational and Environmental Health, she continues to publish academic articles and book chapters and present at scientific conferences around the world.

Real psychological safety requires more than giving people a voice.
Too many organizations believe that if employees can “speak up without fear,” the work is done. But voice alone doesn’t create safety, especially when the conditions that produce harm remain untouched.

Psychological safety is meaningful only when people are protected before they ever need to speak.
If workers must rely on courage to report harm, the organization has already failed them. Voice without protection simply asks people to narrate their own exposure to danger.

This is why psychosocial safety matters.
It focuses on the hazards themselves, the power dynamics, behaviors, norms, and conditions that create trauma long before anyone says a word. When organizations address psychosocial hazards, psychological safety becomes real because people aren’t just free to speak; they’re free from harm.

Giving people a voice is not the solution.
Removing the conditions that make their voice necessary is.
