"What can I do to help?"

This question is often asked of those dealing with loss and other significant change. While well-intended, those being asked may not have the time or energy to think of things you can do, or they might not know who is willing to do what.

Instead, try suggesting specifics. Offer to mow the lawn, pick up groceries, drive their kids to activities. You can simply have them over for dinner - whether for comfort or distractions (or both). Don't offer anything you're not sure is doable - that's antithetical. But be sure to let them know if there are things you are quite and able to do.

If they say no? Let them know the offer has no deadline. Don't be surprised if they go silent for a while. Check on them from time to time; this way, when they are ready for help, comfort or to embark on their new normal, they know you're still present.
