3️⃣ Select your audience - targets your communication to help them remove a specific and extremely painful problem.

4️⃣ Streamline your messaging - carves a specialty area for you even in “saturated” fields.

Which One Are You On?

The Four Levels of Leadership Development

Level One: Self Leadership

Why is Self Leadership foundational? Because “you can only lead others as well as you lead yourself.

Since every area of your life affects every other, you want to be intentional about managing yourself so as not to sabotage your effectiveness at leading others.

Level Two: Leading Others

While formative life, school, and even career stages celebrates individual performance, leading others requires a 180-degree mindset shift to focus on your effectiveness at leading others.

Whereas before you competed against everyone else to be awarded an A+ superstar rating, at this second level of leadership development, recognition and reward come from how well you collaborate and influence others to work together toward common goals.

Level Three: Organizational Leadership

There is only so much human effort can produce - even when multiplied among many.

There reaches a point where adding an additional person yields diminishing returns to the team - no matter how good they are.

To overcome this limitation in even the best of teams, you need to develop the organizational leadership competencies to be able to see, strategize, structure, and systematize performance, to yield predictable progress.

James Clear reminds us, “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”

Level Four: Industry Leadership

After all is said and done at the organizational level, what is left for a successful leader to do?

Leave a legacy, of course.

Leverage the expertise, results, and relationships from each of the previous levels to become a trusted and sought-after industry authority shaping policy, practice, and the people who will lead after you.

A few years ago, I facilitated a virtual 360 Leadership executive learning session for chief executives of a holding company in Southern Africa.

They were alarmed to realize how much their day-to-day wins and ultimately, leadership effectiveness, depended on how well they managed themselves 360 - personally and professionally.

Exploring our 360 Leadership Framework’s 10 domains, which, simplified,
state:

“There is no work-life divide - every area of our lives affects all others”.

They saw how being the heads - not just of their businesses, but often of their extended families and communities, placed additional burdens on them personally.

This affected their individual productivity and performance, people leadership and organizational management, and, ultimately, career trajectories.

Then, the Group CEO, turning to the Chief of Human Resources, addressed the elephant in the room…

He wanted to know the real tax on the group’s workers, work, and workplace of Human Resources interventions that focused on professional development without factoring in the personal problems members of their workforce brings to work each day.


Suddenly, they saw how their individual experiences at the top, were multiplied in the lives of each employee at every level of the organization.

The numbers quickly added up.

The organizational tax on overlooking the impact of the personal domain on the professional cuts across absenteeism, engagement, productivity, performance, turnover, cost-per-hire, and numerous other metrics that ultimately affect HR return on investment and overall business success.

A sobering realization which begs the question:

If the whole person shows up at work and their personal life can either make or break their professional contribution -
