This series is important because despite the increase in societal understanding surrounding autism, there are still many misconceptions about the neurodivergent community.

It's important to understand what autism is NOT.

Please refer to our blog for a more in-depth explanation: https://www.blueskylearning.ca/post/debunking-the-myths-about-autism

In addition, the increased understanding of ADHD and autism has led to a different approach to support from society, known as the neurodiversity-affirming approach.

We have news to share that’s both devastating and encouraging at the same time. As such, your reaction may be either angry frustration or hopeful optimism, or maybe something in between. Regardless, please know that this is one of those important updates for which I really need your attention.

In response to an ever-growing need in the disability community, especially as of late, our nonprofit organization has made the decision to launch an urgent new program to better meet the needs of our clients, the No More Nightmares Emergency Relief Fund.

The need for this program is simple and deeply upsetting:

1. Disabled people experiencing natural disasters are disproportionately impacted in a variety of life-threatening ways.

2. In everyday life, disabled people are increasingly seeing their social safety nets gutted and destroyed. Now more than ever, we’re hearing from clients who, through no fault of their own, are landing in dire situations when their government assistance disappears.

This program will help individuals with urgent needs such as personal hygiene necessities, transportation costs related to evacuation or relocation, and other critical expenses that enable people with disabilities to regain stability and independence.

If you are a disabled person in an emergency situation, please consider applying to us for assistance. We are ready to help!

If you are an ally and supporter, please please PLEASE consider donating to the fundraiser for this new program. The link is in the comments below and your support directly allows us to help more people who desperately need it.

I believe there is still goodness and empathy left in this world worth fighting for, and I know that so many of you agree.

It’s time to come together and truly support the disabled community that our country is trying to leave behind.
