June is Internet Safety Month, and here is the part most businesses miss: you do
not need a sophisticated hacker targeting you to be at risk.

You just need one person reusing a password.

That is all it takes to expose your network, your data, and your clients.
The hard part is that most businesses have no idea where they are vulnerable until it is too late.

The good news is that it is fixable. A free assessment can find the gaps and help
you close them before they become a problem.

School is out.
People are in and out of the office.
There are more interruptions in the day, so work happens in between everything else.

An email comes in. It looks normal. Someone takes care of it and moves on. No red flags, no second thought.

But this time of year, that is often how a security issue starts. When routines
change and attention is split, the wrong thing slips through more easily.

We explain what to watch for in our latest post:

AI is powerful, but it still needs boundaries.

More teams are starting to use AI in their day-to-day work.

That’s not a bad thing if it’s used the right way.

But without a few simple guardrails, it’s easy for things to slip:
🚩 Content going out without review
🚩 Sensitive information being shared
🚩 Tools being used without anyone really knowing

It doesn’t take much to avoid it:
Decide which AI tools are approved in your company
Make sure anything client-facing gets reviewed
Be clear about what should never be entered

AI can save time...but it still needs structure.

👉 A few simple rules now can prevent bigger issues later.

Quick tech tip: use a password manager.

If you’re still reusing passwords, it’s one of the easiest ways for your accounts to get compromised.

A password manager fixes that.

It creates strong, unique passwords for every account and stores them securely so you don’t have to remember them.

No more:

❌ “Password123”
❌ Sticky notes
❌ Reusing the same login everywhere

If you’re not using a password manager yet, here are a few good options:

- 1Password
- Bitwarden
- Dashlane

👉 It’s a simple change that can make a big difference.

As your business grows, things naturally get busier.

•More work.
•More moving parts.
•More to keep up with.

That’s normal.

What’s not normal is when your systems start making it harder.

Things taking longer than they should.
Small issues happening more often.
Your team working around problems instead of moving forward.

Growth comes with pressure…but your IT shouldn’t be part of it.

You leave for the weekend, but your business doesn’t.

And neither do the people trying to break into it.

The risk doesn’t stop after hours, but it does grow.

IT should just work.

You shouldn’t have to:
Restart things constantly
Wait for systems to load
Deal with the same issue twice

But for many businesses, that’s normal.

It doesn’t have to be.

If this sounds familiar, it may be time to rethink your IT.

Ever notice you look at something once online and then it seems to follow you everywhere?

Same product. Same ad. Over and over.

That’s not random.

Websites use cookies to track what you click and share that data with advertisers.

👉 Quick fix: Clear your cookies and block third-party tracking so you’re not being followed around on the internet.

Three words that show up on a real CPA firm’s insurance control review.

Most firms have multi factor authentication turned on. Far fewer can prove it across every account, which is exactly what cyber insurance carriers and the FTC Safeguards Rule expect.

Brian Butterfield covered MFA, along with strong passphrases, device awareness, and tested backups, in his 2026 S.T.A.R.S. Summit session on May 19.

“Would you rather assume your firm’s cybersecurity posture, or actually know it?”

Brian Butterfield closed his 2026 S.T.A.R.S. Summit session with that question on May 19. Most CPA firm partners operate on assumption.

The ones who decide to actually know usually start the same way, with an honest look at where the firm stands today versus where it should be.
