When the Cazones River overflowed into the Morelos neighborhood of Poza Rica, Veracruz, in October 2025, the water rose frighteningly fast.

Inside one of the homes were Hilario Reynosa and his wife, Elodia Reyes Azuara, known by their neighbors simply as Don Layo and Doña Elo.

Hilario had spent much of his life working as a fisherman. Years on the water had made him a strong swimmer, even in difficult currents.

Elodia couldn’t swim.

When the flood tore through their home, the current suddenly swept her away.

Hilario didn’t hesitate. He went after her.

“The strong current came and took her away. I dove in to look for her but couldn’t find her,” he later recalled.

For a terrifying moment, she disappeared into the dark, muddy water.

Then someone nearby spotted her.

Hilario immediately went back into the flood.

When he reached Elodia, he told her to wrap her arms around his neck. Then the lifelong fisherman began swimming through the current, carrying his wife back to safety.

With their home overwhelmed by water, the couple climbed as high as they could and held on.

For hours, they stayed together surrounded by brown floodwater, waiting for daylight and help to arrive. Eventually, a neighbor reached them with a small boat.

Footage of the elderly couple embracing in the middle of the flood quickly spread across Mexico.

It was one small moment in a much larger tragedy. Severe flooding had devastated several Mexican states, destroying homes and taking dozens of lives.

But amid all that destruction, Hilario and Elodia became a symbol of survival and love.

Five days later, AFP photographed and interviewed them in the devastated neighborhood. Much of what they owned had been damaged or destroyed.

But they had survived.

Hilario credited his years as a fisherman with giving him the skills he needed to reach his wife that night.

The couple described their survival in just a few words:

“We were both born again.”

Sadly, their story didn’t end there.

On October 27, a little more than two weeks after surviving the flood, Elodia died while receiving medical care. She was 72.

Hilario had fought through a raging current to bring his wife back, only to lose her days later.

Their neighbors would remember her simply as Doña Elo. 🤍

For one brief moment during a national tragedy, a camera captured something deeply human.

They couldn’t stop the river.

They couldn’t save their home.

They couldn’t know what was coming next.

All they could do was hold on to each other.

And they did.

🚨 10 Gross Things That Tell Me You Might Be an Unsanitary Caregiver 🤢

As caregivers, we are trusted with someone's health, dignity, and safety. Hygiene isn't optional—it's part of quality care.

Here are 10 habits every professional caregiver should avoid:

❌ 1. Long, dirty fingernails that collect germs.
❌ 2. Wearing the same gloves from one task to another.
❌ 3. Not washing your hands before and after providing care.
❌ 4. Strong body odor or wearing dirty clothing to work.
❌ 5. Coughing or sneezing without covering your mouth or washing your hands afterward.
❌ 6. Sitting on a client's bed with your shoes or personal belongings.
❌ 7. Preparing food without washing your hands first.
❌ 8. Leaving soiled briefs, trash, or linens sitting around instead of disposing of them properly.
❌ 9. Using a client's towels, personal hygiene items, or food without permission.
❌ 10. Wearing excessive perfume or cigarette smoke into a client's home, especially around those with respiratory conditions.

✨ Great caregivers understand that cleanliness protects lives. Every clean hand, fresh uniform, and sanitary habit builds trust and shows respect for the people we serve.

At Journey Together Home Care Agency, we believe excellence is found in the little things because every client deserves compassionate, professional, and dignified care.

🚨5 Caregiver Mistakes That Can Lead to Burnout🚨

If you're caring for a loved one or working as a professional caregiver, thank you. 💙 Your work matters—but you can't pour from an empty cup.

Here are five common mistakes that can leave caregivers exhausted:

💙 1. Putting everyone else's needs before your own.
You deserve to eat, rest, hydrate, and take breaks too. Caring for yourself isn't selfish—it's essential.

🥤 2. Forgetting to stay hydrated and nourished.
Skipping meals and living on coffee may get you through the moment, but your body needs real fuel to keep caring for others.

🤝 3. Trying to do everything alone.
Asking for help is a sign of wisdom, not weakness. Lean on family, friends, respite care, or community resources when you need support.

😴 4. Ignoring the signs of burnout.
Constant exhaustion, irritability, trouble sleeping, or feeling emotionally drained are signals that it's time to slow down and care for yourself.

❤️ 5. Feeling guilty for taking a break.
Rest is part of caregiving. Taking time to recharge helps you show up with more patience, compassion, and energy.

💗 Remember: The best caregivers aren't the ones who never get tired—they're the ones who recognize when they need support and give themselves permission to receive it.

👇🏾 Which one do you struggle with the most?
Let me know in the comments. You are not alone. 🤗
