Your first year in any lab will teach you things no class, no textbook, and no supervisor ever could.

What did your first year teach you that nobody warned you about?

Drop it in the comments - I read every one.

A VP once asked me why histology couldn't be more automated.

I told her: "Because there are more exceptions than rules."

20 years on the floor taught me that.

The best lab operators aren't the ones with the perfect plan. They're the ones who
built space into the plan for when it breaks, and knew exactly what to do when it did.

That's not a methodology.
That's experience.

People ask why I launched when I did.

I walked away from certainty. From steady income. From the version of myself I'd known since I was 16. Always employed, always delivering for someone else.

I traded titles and pay rates for self-accomplishment. Great ideas I couldn't implement for the autonomy to actually build something.

That trade scared me.
It still does some days.

But I've never once questioned whether it was right.

Most labs don't have a staffing problem.
They have a cross-training problem.

There's a difference.

Headcount looks fine on paper. But when one person calls out and three things slow down, that's not a staffing issue β€” that's a single point of failure built into the workflow.

I've seen teams of 150 people still functionally dependent on 10 of them.

Cross-training isn't a nice-to-have.
It's your operational insurance policy.

Every healthcare system wants a digital pathology program.

Most of them aren't operationally ready for one.

Here's what the vendor sales pitch doesn't cover:

The success of any digital pathology program is determined before a single slide hits the scanner.

Label placement. Staining quality. Section thickness. Tissue processing. Every upstream lab workflow feeds directly into what the pathologist sees on screen.

Put simply: you can have the best scanner on the market and still get unusable images, because the lab prep wasn't built with digital in mind.

This is the conversation most labs aren't having early enough.

Earlier this month I presented at the Lab Design Conference in Orlando.

After the session, I had architects, planners, and lab operators stop me to say the same thing:

"I never thought about the move strategy. I always focused on the build."

That moment stayed with me.

Because in my experience, the building is the part everyone plans for. The move is the part that breaks labs.

If your team is planning a relocation and nobody is talking move strategy yet β€” that's exactly where I come in.

Twenty years ago I was a histotech standing at a microtomy station, wondering why nobody had fixed the workflow problem I was looking at.

Turns out, that curiosity never left.

Today, The Crenshaw Method is officially open. πŸŽ‰

I built this firm for the labs that are ready to run better, and for the leaders who are done accepting "this is just how we do it" as an answer.

Three areas where I do my best work:

βœ“ **AP lab operations and digital pathology: diagnosing what's breaking, building what fixes it

βœ“ **Lab design: bridging the gap between floor plans and the people who work in them

βœ“ **Private equity: giving PE-backed lab platforms the operational depth their portfolios are missing

If you've worked alongside me, trained beside me, or just know what it takes to keep an AP lab running, you already know what this is about.

If you're new here, welcome. I'm glad you're in the room.
