On this day in 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, with the news that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people were now free—two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.

This day symbolizes not just the end of slavery but the beginning of a long journey toward equality and justice. Interestingly, Juneteenth also offers valuable lessons for modern change management in organizations.

1. Clear Communication is Crucial
When General Granger delivered General Order No. 3, it represented a critical communication that changed lives forever. In change management, clear, direct communication is essential. Leaders must ensure that all stakeholders understand the nature, purpose, and benefits of the change.
