Juneteenth: A Powerful Analogy for Change Management

Every year on June 19th, Americans celebrate Juneteenth, a day that marks a pivotal moment in history. On this day in 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, with the news that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people were now free—two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.

This day symbolizes not just the end of slavery but the beginning of a long journey toward equality and justice. Interestingly, Juneteenth also offers valuable lessons for modern change management in organizations.

1. Clear Communication is Crucial
When General Granger delivered General Order No. 3, it represented a critical communication that changed lives forever. In change management, clear, direct communication is essential. Leaders must ensure that all stakeholders understand the nature, purpose, and benefits of the change. Just as the message of emancipation needed to reach everyone affected, change initiatives must be communicated effectively across the entire organization.

2. Timeliness and Follow-Through

The holidays can be especially hard for people with disorders, and has kneecapped a lovely family this year.

This family is dear to us. They are amazing people that we know intimately and have celebrated many holidays together.

The father is a 35-year-old combat veteran. Like many other veterans, he suffers from PTSD and other mental health issues. He recently experienced an episode that required immediate and extended inpatient care, not fully covered by his benefits.

Like many American families today, they live paycheck to paycheck, so now his wife, who is dealing with a high-risk pregnancy (it’s a girl!), and their preschool-aged daughter have no income. (I hope you understand that due to mental health privacy concerns, and that a child is part of the story I’m not sharing names).

We started a to not only provide them with essential shelter and basic needs, but will also ensure that their daughter has minimal disruption while she tries to understand why “daddy isn’t coming home for a while”.

Many of us have a loved one or know someone who struggles with their mental health.
