You don’t have a people problem. You have a handoff problem.

The estimator knew about the long-lead item. The PM found out in week six. The field found out when it didn’t show up. Nobody was lazy. The information just had nowhere to go.

→ Sales to estimating: does the scope match what was sold?
→ Estimating to PM: does the budget carry the assumptions?
→ PM to field: does the super see the same plan?
→ Field to billing: does the change order get priced, or eaten?

Fixing operations means finding the exact desk where the job gets dropped and closing that gap. Not a binder. One connected system the whole team actually uses, holding one record of the job from the first call to the final invoice.

I’ve run the ops I fix. That’s the difference.

Where does your job get dropped? One word in the comments: sales, estimating, PM, field or billing.

Bid due Friday. Takeoff still in a PDF.

Every estimator knows this week. The drawings dropped late, addendum 3 changed the finishes, and the subs you need haven’t called back.

The PDF isn’t the problem. Measuring it by hand on a Thursday night is.

→ Digital takeoff and pricing built from the actual documents
→ Scope sheets so every sub is bidding the same job
→ A go/no-go before you burn a week on work you can’t win
→ A bid strategy based on who you’re really up against

I’ve spent 30 years on the estimating side, from hard bid to negotiated to public works. The estimating desk is remote, so your market works as well as mine.

Tech Week is about building the future. Some weeks the future is just getting the number in on time and right.

Your missed call is somebody else’s job.

A homeowner, a property manager, a GC with a scope gap. They call. You’re on a lift, in a meeting or driving the 405. They don’t leave a voicemail. They call the next name on the list.

→ Missed call → instant text back, in your voice
→ Every lead lands in one pipeline, not three inboxes
→ Follow-up runs on a schedule, not on your memory
→ Quotes that go quiet get a nudge before they go cold

None of this replaces your estimator or your PM. It just makes sure the phone never decides who you work for.

CRM and automation for contractors, set up so the field actually uses it. Fully remote, so LA is home turf for this one.

What happens today when you miss a call? Honest answers in the comments.

Most contractors I talk to price every job from scratch. Kitchen, bath, deck, it’s a fresh guess every time, and the guess usually leaves money on the table.

Unit pricing fixes that. You build a cost per square foot, linear foot or each from your own past jobs: labor hours times your rate, plus material, plus waste. Then you put overhead and profit on top, separately, every single time.

Once you have it, a bid takes an hour instead of a weekend, and your numbers stop swinging job to job.

The Unit Pricing Framework is inside The Trailer, my free community for contractors who want tighter estimates and smoother operations.

It's not the mistakes on the job that quietly kill your margin.

It's the stuff nobody wrote down — the scope gap you're now eating for free because "everyone assumed." Mistakes you can see. Scope gaps you find on the P&L, three months too late.

Close the gaps before they close your margin.

Bay Area built. LA bound. LA Tech Week starts today.

Straight talk first: my field work — construction management and owner’s rep — stays in the Bay Area. I’ll tell you plainly when something falls outside it.

But construction tech doesn’t care about the freeway. The systems work runs remote, and it’s most of what LA contractors ask me about:

→ Digital estimating and bid strategy, built from the documents
→ CRM and automation that answers when you can’t
→ AI and automation set up around how your office already runs
→ Dashboards that stop the job from falling between desks

Same construction. Smarter systems. Different freeway.

If you run a construction company in LA and the office is the bottleneck, let’s find it this week.

If you got into construction because you're great at building - not because you love spreadsheets, follow-up emails and payroll - you are the rule, not the exception.

Almost every contractor I work with is exceptional at the actual work. The business is where it gets shaky.

That's not a character flaw. Nobody handed you a system for running a construction company. You learned the trade on the job and the business you've been figuring out as you go.

"Figuring it out as you go" is expensive. It shows up as bids you underprice, leads you never follow up, good people you can't keep, and cash that's tight even when you're slammed.

Here's the reframe: a growing construction company isn't run on talent. It's run on systems. You can install the same ones the big firms use without the corporate overhead.

You can build anything. Let's make the business run as well as the work.
