Here’s the deal: Your designer is not trying to be a stick in the mud or boring when they say no to an idea. They are advocating for you and your business by following your brand guidelines.

Why do they matter? Brand guidelines, just like your brand, are more than your logo. They are more than your color palette or the font you use. It’s the way you speak, not just in person but in emails (we have all heard the term “corporate voice” at work). It is the aesthetic that you cultivate across all your platforms and marketing channels. All so your customers and audience leave with a distinct impression or feeling about your brand. A jumbled heap of color, fonts, styles, and aesthetic for your content/adds does not breed trust. It makes your company look disorganized and messy. Having a clear set of brand guidelines ensures that you and your team are able to be creative while still looking and feeling like the same brand.

Brand guidelines are there to guide. Not hamper one’s creativity. If you can make an idea work within the bounds of your guidelines, great! If not, then it may be time to go back to the drawing board. Your designers and marketing team are experts at navigating your brand and finding ways to make things work within it’s limitations. When they give you that no, it is because they want to stay true to your company’s voice, aesthetic, goals, and mission.

Guidelines are not a barrier. They are a road map for consistency and success. An occasional deviation? Yup, those can, and should, happen from time to time. But the deviations should happen with intention and have a distinct purpose and reason. Trust your team to know when that is and listen to them. You set up the guidelines for a reason. Listen to them.

A high-end thrift store, Priceless Dreams brings quality fashion to the Flint area without the elevated price tag. Owner, Pamela Price, loves to see people walking out her doors feeling like a million bucks without breaking the bank. Not to mention all the additional philanthropic work that Pamela and the company do behind the scenes as well. ✨
