Frankfort Beach E. coli Advisory – September 3, 2026
Recent water-quality testing at Frankfort Beach found E. coli levels of 488 colonies per 100 mL, resulting in a Level 2 Partial Body Contact Advisory.
Under this advisory, E. coli levels meet EGLE standards for wading, fishing, and boating; however, water contact above the waist is not advised at this time.
Frankfort Beach has not historically experienced elevated E. coli levels or recurring water-quality concerns. While the specific cause of the current elevated reading has not been determined, yesterday's significant rainfall and storm conditions may have contributed to the temporary increase.
According to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), elevated E. coli levels can occur following significant rainfall when stormwater runoff carries bacteria and other material from surrounding land, streets, stormwater systems, wildlife areas, and other surfaces into lakes and other surface waters. Wildlife, including waterfowl, can also contribute to temporary increases in bacteria levels.
EGLE notes that beach water quality will often recover within a day or two following a rainfall-related increase in bacteria.
City officials are aware of the situation, and follow-up water samples will be collected this morning, September 3. Results from the additional sampling are expected Friday morning, September 4, 2026.
The City will continue to monitor the situation closely. Once the follow-up results are received, they will be made available to the public as soon as possible.
Until updated results are available, beach users are asked to follow the Level 2 Partial Body Contact Advisory and avoid water contact above the waist.
The City of Frankfort appreciates the public's cooperation and will provide an update as soon as additional testing information becomes available.
