Lot 60 in our January 30th auction (just two days away) is this large encapsulated photographic print entitled - for good reason - “Hair”.
An internationally recognized artist, photographer and explorer, Roberto Dutesco’s work spans a 35-year period and documents the free movements of the wild horses of Sable Island (off Nova Scotia). It has been this body of work on the Sable Island horses that raised awareness and ultimately contributed to their becoming officially protected... A perfect example of how art can change lives!

More from the arts of Asia category in our January 30 auction: lots 8, 15, 22 and 26.
Aside from the painted porcelain vase that we’ve already posted are some interesting and unexpected objects.
The painted Japanese scroll is one of four in the sale and we love the subject’s bright red dress and the interesting crop resulting from the way the shade crosses the plane, diagonally.
The architectural wedding hat from the Yao people of southeastern China is another uncommon wonder. Severe, sweeping compositions constructed entirely of fabric hardened with a resinous mixture, these hats also testify to both the unique artistic aesthetic and engineering expertise of the Yao.
And - last but certainly not least - the happiest (or most mischievous) Japanese Shinto lion dogs. Each with wide grins, the brightly painted pair is possibly the most joy-inspiring lot in the sale and we’ve loved having them around in the lead-up to this sale.

Lot 8 in our January 30th auction is a Chinese famille rose porcelain vase.
This finely-potted piece is painted in the round with a charming scene of immortals and boys harvesting a crop of watermelon beneath the shade of gnarled trees against a lush mountain landscape. It’s a joyful scene with a few of the figures even laughing while they cut and eat the slices.
Though twentieth century, the iron-red mark on the base harks back to the Qianlong period (1736-1795).

Lots 37-45 of our January 30 auction are comprised entirely of traditional African art of which this selection is just a sampling.
Shown are a stool with lion support from the Ashanti people, a stunning crest mask with female figure from the Ibibio people, a very smartly dressed and mustachioed colonial figure from the Baule people and a rare shrine figure from the Bidjogo people.
Other lots in the category include a spectacular and early Dogon mask, a Igbo shrine object combining two abstract ikenga figures, a zoomorphic Luba kifwebe mask in the form of a cat, a Chokwe katoyo (foreigner) mask and a lovely Moba sun pendant.
All items are live and open for bidding via LiveAuctioneers (link in bio).

Lot 66 in our January 30 auction is this quintessential and familiar New York City scene by the noted American impressionist painter Guy Carleton Wiggins (1883-1962).
Famous for his works capturing the streets of Manhattan during snowfall, Wiggins titled this work simply “Midtown”.
Trained by his father, the painter Carlton Wiggins, Guy’s fame and popularity soon exceeded that of his father’s, as evidenced by the fact that he became – at 20 years old – the youngest American painter to have a work accepted into the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The anthropomorphic Luba mask (lot 44) is pretty great, too!
In-person preview by appointment until January 29.
Bidding is open via the LiveAuctioneers platform until January 30. ( https://www.liveauctioneers.com/catalog/315830_winter-fine-art-antiques-and-jewelry-auction/ )
