Try soft.

Not everything needs the "go hard or go home" approach. To start, you don't have to have the perfect conversation or the intense workout plan.

Ask how their day was. Go for a walk. Say one honest thing instead of staying quiet.

Start where you are. Build from there.

How much do you “need” control in your relationships?

Power dynamics can shift due to addiction, an affair, etc. but in healthy relationships, both individuals are free to have a voice and power in the relationship.

In what type of situations have you seen control issues harm a relationship?

Safety isn't just physical.

Do the people closest to you listen and care when you say something hard? Do you create that kind of environment for the people around you?

That is emotional safety, and it is a major contributing factor to someone's level of vulnerability.

What helps you feel safe?

Do you ask for help?

Let’s look at what Isaiah 43 says about people asking for help.

Do you find it easy or difficult to ask for help from others or God?

How important is it for a woman to feel safe in a relationship?

Not just safe from abuse, but safe to express and show up fully.

Are you hard on yourself?

There’s function in the dysfunction. There’s good in the negative behavior. If you are hard on yourself, you probably drive yourself to get more accomplished, which feels good. This reinforces the cycle.

This can be a problem in marriage, too. If you are critical of yourself, your spouse likely feels criticized from time to time.

Instead, be gentler on yourself. Set goals and encourage yourself to continue being a high achiever. Give yourself credit for doing hard things. Ask yourself, would I be this hard on someone else?

Lord,
Holy Creator, would You help us make the best of our days? We want to get a ton done, but we also want to be kind rather than critical, hopeful rather than discouraged.
Amen.

How is it different to work with us, Chuck and Ashley, compared to a community mental health center?

In addition to our coaching services that are different, we are also willing to build something that’s tailored to an individual or couple’s needs or creative ideas!

We’ve hosted a small group couple’s mountain biking adventure and retreat, and we’ve developed workshops for boards and teams to build professional relationships and communication skills.

What creative ways have you seen people build personal and professional relationships?

How is it different to work with us, Chuck and Ashley?

Here are just a couple of ways we’re different from a typical community counseling agency.

We take a smaller caseload. That means we can be more engaged and present with our clients.

We emphasize setting and reaching goals over diagnosis.

What if it’s not because they don’t care, it’s because they don’t know what to do next.

The pattern is common. The woman is upset, the man pulls back. If the man isn’t going to fix it and doesn’t have the right answer, there is a resistance to engaging.

Men, try this. When you feel yourself going blank and wanting to withdraw, say something like “What do you need from me?”

This often defuses both of you and you can go from there.

To the women: what do you think it’s like for him to approach you when you are upset?

Blame-shifting feels logical. If I can make you look worse than me, I'm off the hook.

But the couples who actually make progress aren't the ones who build the best case against their partner. They're the ones willing to take responsibility first.

And yes, your partner may have really hurt you. This is not trying to convince you they didn't. But you'll gain more ground starting with yourself than you ever will keeping score.
