🏙️ Building the Blueprint: Co-op Hubs in Every District of Gary
The Gary Food Collective is launching a game-changing initiative — establishing co-op food hubs in every district of Gary, Indiana. These neighborhood-based hubs are more than just food pantries — they are the seeds of self-sufficiency, rooted in dignity, ownership, and long-term transformation.
Each hub will:
🥦 Distribute fresh, healthy, and affordable food through regular, dignity-centered events — offering hot meals, pantry staples, and free grocery baskets to families in need.
👩🏫 Serve as a training ground for residents — developing workforce skills, co-op management experience, and pathways to entrepreneurship.
🤝 Foster true community ownership — ensuring that Gary residents have a real stake in their food systems, from how food is sourced to how it’s sold.
These hubs are the foundation stones for Gary’s first community-owned grocery store — a long-term vision that’s already taking shape with land cleared, store plans in motion, and community trust growing every day.
🧱 In Essence, These Co-op Hubs Represent:
Function Description:
Access :Fresh produce, quality meats, and pantry staples close to home
Education :Skills training in co-op leadership, logistics, and entrepreneurship
Ownership: Residents guiding, running, and benefiting from the hub operations
Infrastructure Revitalizing vacant properties into thriving community anchors
These hubs are not just feeding people — they’re building a new economy. Together, we’re reclaiming our blocks, retraining our workforce, and restoring our power.
This is how we build a city-owned by its people — one hub, one block, one grocery store at a time.
