You Seem Fine… Until You’re Not: What Pneumonia Can Teach Us About Business Health

This week I was up north with my family having an incredible time. I felt great. We were having a blast, enjoying the outdoors, time on the water, and making memories. Then out of nowhere, bam. Aches, chills, sweats, a pounding headache behind my eyes, and just crippling fatigue. A quick visit to the doctor and a few X-rays later, the diagnosis was in: pneumonia.

Here’s the thing. My body had been carrying the infection for a while. I just didn’t know it yet. I felt fine until suddenly I didn’t.

The same thing happens in business all the time.

Sales are good. The team seems strong. Everything appears to be working just fine. Then out of left field, sales drop, the bank account shrivels, and suddenly it feels like you’re sliding down the mountain you just climbed.

But unlike our bodies, where illness can go unnoticed until it hits hard, businesses give us early warning signs if we’re paying attention to the right things.

Most business owners only watch what I call “data layer one,” their profit and loss statement and balance sheet. Those reports are important, but they’re like looking in the rearview mirror. They show what has happened, not what will happen.

That’s why we use ActionCOACH’s Five Ways formula to track forward-looking indicators:

1. Number of leads
2. Conversion rate
3. Average dollar sale
4. Number of transactions
5. Gross profit

Let’s say June sales were strong. You feel great about where you’re headed. But in July, things slow down unexpectedly. The first question I’d ask is, what did your lead flow look like in April, May, and June? If leads dropped but sales were still strong, the drop in revenue won’t show up until later. Just like my pneumonia. You feel great, until you don’t.

Symptoms in business don’t always show up immediately, but if you’re only looking at financial statements, you’ll miss the early signs, and by the time you feel it, it’s often too late for a quick fix.

The good news is, this is preventable. If you’re tracking the right data, your leading indicators, you can stay ahead of the curve and stop issues before they start.

If you’d like to learn how to implement the Five Ways formula in your business, I’d love to connect. Let’s have a conversation and put a system in place that gives you clarity, confidence, and control.

One simple thing anyone can begin implementing today that can drastically impact your business? Start tracking your leads and conversion rate today! It’s so simple but I would estimate 9/10 businesses don’t know their lead data. You can only improve that which you measure. Dont wait, start today!

Thankfully the antibiotics are working and I will be back in action next week 👍

“No one wants to work anymore.”

Im guessing you have heard this phrase before. I hear it from nearly every business owner I coach and probably everyday.
And honestly? I’ve seen signs of it in my own house too.

But if there’s anything I can do about it, that won’t be our family’s story.

So this summer, we are putting our kids to work.

They’re selling firewood to Airbnb guests and travelers in our area, learning how to bundle, price, serve customers, and take pride in a job well done.

At first it was, “Dad… seriously?”
But after the first day, they couldn’t wait to tell me how many bundles they sold and how much they were worth. They were pumped. Proud. Lit up.

That’s when it clicked.
We don’t have a work ethic problem.
We have an opportunity problem.

Our kids are capable, but we’ve got to give them chances to step up.
There’s never been a more challenging time to be a business owner or a parent than today.
But we’re not throwing up our hands.
We’re fighting culture.

We’re raising kids with:

Honor
Respect
Responsibility
Work ethic
Teamwork
Entrepreneurial grit

Because life isn’t handed to you.
You build it.
And I want my kids to know how to not just survive, but thrive.

Whether you’re leading a business or a family, you set the culture.
Let’s raise up the next generation to own their attitude, their work, and their impact.

Now we just need to come up with a business name for these 3 entrepeneurs 😀

Henry loves basketball! He’s at that age where the fundamentals really matter; layups, dribbling, footwork. And like most kids (and adults), his dominant hand does most of the work. His left hand? Feels like a foreign object.

But this week, Henry fractured his right wrist playing kickball. No more shooting, no more games with his friends for the next several weeks. He was crushed.

As parents, we did what we could to cheer him up, and eventually we found the silver lining: “Henry, maybe this is your chance to work on your left hand. Most players never do unless they’re forced to.”

The look on his face said it all, he hadn’t thought of that.

It got me thinking, how often does this same thing happen in business?

You lose a key employee, Your top customer leaves, A competitor undercuts you, You launch a product and it flops.

Your first thought? This is a disaster. But the real question is, What mindset do you choose from here?

Winners don’t dwell on the setback. They ask, How can I use this to my advantage? How do I get better from this?

Maybe that key employee leaving shows you where you need better systems. Maybe losing your biggest customer exposes an unhealthy dependency, and pushes you to build a stronger, more diverse client base. Maybe that failed launch teaches you what your audience actually wants. Maybe this challenge is exactly what you needed to grow in ways you never would have otherwise.

Henry had a choice. He could have felt sorry for himself, sat on the sidelines, and missed a major opportunity. But this week, he did it. He leaned in, worked on his left hand, and started dribbling and shooting with the hand that once felt useless.

He took what looked like a setback and turned it into a setup for growth.

I’m proud of him.

And I pray the same for you. That whatever you're facing in business, or life, you don’t let it define you, you let it refine you.

Because winners don’t dwell on the setback, They ask, How do I come back stronger?

So, what’s in front of you right now? A roadblock, or a chance to build a whole new bag of tricks?

If you’re the smartest person in the room… you are probably in the wrong room.

This past week, I had the opportunity to attend the ActionCOACH GoBig Conference, and I’ll admit, there were moments I felt like everyone else was speaking a language I hadn’t learned yet.

You ever sit in a room where everyone but you seems to know a concept you’re completely clueless about?

Yeah, that was me. And honestly, I loved it!

No disrespect to myself, I’ve worked hard to get where I am. But being surrounded by people who’ve built amazing businesses, overcome serious challenges, and are constantly learning, that’s exactly where growth happens.

Growth doesn’t come from being the one with all the answers.
It comes from asking better questions.
From being humbled, stretched, and inspired.

Who you surround yourself with matters.
Your circle will either keep you comfortable or pull you to the next level.

So if you ever find yourself feeling like the “dumbest” in the room, good. Stay there. Lean in. That’s where the real transformation happens.

What does pouring concrete with two kids teach you about leadership? A lot more than you'd expect.

This weekend, I went out to install a basketball hoop — alone. By the end, I had sore muscles I didn’t even know existed… and a fresh reminder that leadership is less about doing everything yourself and more about building a team that works together.

Whether you’re running a business or just trying to be a more present dad, this story might challenge you to slow down, delegate, and enjoy the people beside you — because that’s where the real ROI is.
