Climbing Mountains Consulting utilized May as Mental Health Awareness Month to touch base with local police departments about wellness and deliver self-care baskets. The baskets included self-care tip cards to support resilience in this job as well as items such as Gatorades, protein bars and mints.

Because sometimes self-care is about debriefs with colleagues, or trauma processing in therapy….and sometimes self-care is about being hydrated and fed.

Mental Health Awareness expands beyond May into every day of every month. Keep taking care of you.

To all of the departments: be safe, and be well. 💙

On this Memorial Day, Climbing Mountains Consulting pauses to remember those that have given their lives in the name of our freedom, to honor those that have sacrificed their well-being due to the tolls of war, and to hold close all those who have grieved a loved one, a friend, or a comrade. ❤️

Freedom is not free and we are indebted to your service and sacrifice. 🇺🇸

Walden University posted a great summary of why mental health and wellness needs to be prioritized within law enforcement in 5 bullet points:
1. LEO report higher rates of depression, anxiety, and PTSD
2. More LEO die by completed su***de than in the line of duty.
3. Work productivity is negatively impacted by mental health concerns.
4. Most LEO do not seek care for mental health issues.
5. Mental illnesses are prevalent among those with LEO jobs.

Therapists should continue to do more to educate themselves on culturally competent topics to support LEO and other first responders. However, the article notes another significant barrier for LEO seeking support: that they simply did not recognize that they were experiencing a mental health issue. or concern. How are they supposed to reach out to peer support, counseling, or another trusted professional if they don't know that they should?

I discuss that point every time I get the chance. I'll continue to educate on mental health in the LEO career because "when they know better, they can do better, every time".

Climbing Mountains Consulting pauses this week to recognize National Police Week.

Departments from around the country utilize this week to remember the officers who have offered the greatest sacrifice and to support their family members.

This week provides each of us an opportunity to acknowledge the many sacrifices that law enforcement experience as they provide protection and justice to their communities, to express gratitude to the officers who continue to provide service to their neighborhoods, to support the family members that have experienced the greatest of losses, and to honor the memories of those that have laid down their lives.

There is a balance in carving out space for a group event while recognizing that each LEO wife will have their own story and own experiences and own needs. While significant time was spent in researching and planning and envisioning how to create a day that could support each individual attendee, I am indebted to the colleagues that joined me in making this day a reality.

Brittany Edie from Graceful Balance Wellness provided an opening yoga and guided meditation workshop.

Sarah Haberbosh from Roots of Strength, LLC and Courtney Kramer from Mountaintop Counseling LLC, Carlisle joined me in teaching clinical aspects of mental wellness, suicidality, family dynamics and self-care.

Steph Widdowson from Primrose and Harp provided a floral class that beautifully coincided with an afternoon theme of courage.

I believe that we are better able to support others when we invite everyone to the table; I’m grateful for those that continue to walk these paths of mental wellness and self-care along side me.

There’s more to come. The next retreat details will be announced this month!
