I attended a Vortex LE Instructor Workshop this week.. all of the others in the class were running M4 style rifles.. I was running an IWI Tavor X95 Bullpup with a EOTECH Vudu 1-8×. At the end of the course, we played an informal game of PIG as a shoot-off competition and I ended up winning.. I won a new Vortex LPVO and mount as the prize.. it was a fun day. I might have had an unfair advantage by running a bullpup with all the weight balanced in the rear.

I'm often asked for a ranking of the best fighting 12g. Shotguns for Military and LE use. Here's my ranking based on my experience..

#5: Mossberg 500: (single action pump) A simple and consistent pump shotgun with an Ambi safety, perfect for lefties. Upgrade to rifle sights. Capacity 5-1

#4: Re*****on 870P: (single action pump) The industry standard in pump shotguns. I do recommend upgrading to rifle sights and mag extension. Capacity 5-1 or 7-1 with extension.

#3: Benelli M4: (Gas operated semi-auto) The industry standard in semi-auto shotguns. I recommend upgrade of RDS on a pic rail and a mag. extension. Capacity 5-1 up to 7-1

#2: Beretta 1301 Tactical: (Gas operated semi-auto) Basically an out of the box Benelli M4 with larger release buttons and several standard upgrades. I've fired 5 rds in 1.5 seconds with this SG. Upgrade to an RDS on the pic rail. Capacity 5-1 or 7-1 with extension.

#1: IWI TS-12: (adjustable Gas operated semi-auto) Basically a Benelli M4 style system in a bullpup design with 3 rotating magazine tubes. With 3 tubes, this beast can hold up to 17 rds. of 12g ammo with a skilled user able to empty all loads on target in under 10 seconds. The bullpup design keeps overall length under 30". It has all the strengths of the Benelli and Beretta in a shorter more balanced package that holds 2-3 times the ammo. It also has the ability to be completely ambidextrous for lefties. Upgrade to RDS on the standard top pic rail. Capacity 16-1 with a ghost load.

Honorable mention: Benelli Nova pump: (single action pump) Polymer receiver with a chrome lined barrel with standard rifle sights. Very similiar to the 870 with the addition of a button on the foregrip specifically designed for select loading the chamber. Lite-weight but extremely accurate for a shotgun. 5-1 or 7-1 with extended mag.

It should be noted that the higher on my rankings these shotguns get, the more expensive and ammo finicky they are, needing powerful high energy loads to function to their potential.

This past week, Dark Knight taught a Tactical Instructor Development course for the professional security staff at Southern Nuclear Plant Vogtle near Augusta, GA. I had a great time enhancing their Patrol Rifle skills and working on their instructing skills. It's always a blessing serving the professionals that protect our nations sensitive critical infrastructure.
